Modules

This degree combines general business knowledge with key theories and concepts in entrepreneurship, enterprise and innovation. You’ll consider how organisations function and the available routes to new venture creation in different circumstances, such as small businesses, family businesses, not-for-profit organisations and large established corporations.

You’ll also gain a solid understanding of areas such as managing people, operations, logistics, marketing and business ethics. In each year of study, you will take a combination of core and optional modules which cover specialisms such as entrepreneurial practice or social media for business, for example.

Types of module

Our undergraduate courses comprise three types of module:

  • Core modules: compulsory modules that you must take each year
  • Option modules: modules that you can choose from to tailor your course to your interests, normally related to your subject area
  • Elective modules (also called 'Electives'): wider, interdisciplinary modules that you may be able to choose from to broaden your academic experience and skills – covering everything from learning a new language to building enterprise skills

Module availability

We aim to offer a wide range of option modules and electives, but we cannot always guarantee your preferred choices as availability can be affected by timetabling constraints, staff availability or student demand.

Elective modules may be subject to change, but you can look through an indicative list on our University-wide electives page.

You are introduced to the functions of business organisations, the broader business environment, and key management skills and competencies, including information gathering and analysis, accounting, marketing and organisational behaviour.

We consider business organisations – their purposes, structures and governance in a global context, together with cultural differences and ethical constraints. You’ll learn about basic management accounting concepts and deepen your understanding of company financial information, in particular how this information gets reported and analysed. Drawing on real-life data from FAME, you’ll be tasked with analysing the financial performance of an organisation of your choice.

Core modules

In this module, you will gain a fundamental grounding in a wide range of accounting and financial issues. You will also have the opportunity to develop decision-making skills that are essential for managers through the analysis and interpretation of financial information. You will appreciate this module because you will gain a desirable skill set recognised by employers including analytical skills using a variety of techniques that will keep you interested and engaged throughout the module.

This module introduces the important roles of information and analytics in the business decision making context. It takes you on a journey through responsible acquisition, analysis, presentation and preservation of information. Digital business software and its practical applications in finding, analysing and communicating data and information will be explored. Understanding of information flows within organisations and the management and operations functions and the systems needed to support decision making securely and ethically will be developed by a mix of hands on, classroom based learning and self-directed study.

The module offers you the opportunity to learn how global economies work and the general context in which the business organisations operate.  You'll analyse the purpose, structures and ethical and environmental constraints faced by organisations across different industries. At the same time, you'll study the cultural differences within and between business organisations and as part of the learning process you'll develop research, team work and communication skills.

This module aims to provide you with an introduction to the role of marketing in the organisation and the key concepts that underpin the activities of the marketer. It aims to provide you with an understanding of the marketing environment and the importance of gathering appropriate information to inform marketing decision-making. It considers the marketing process; examining consumer behaviour and decision-making and understanding the marketing mix and its application and adaptation within different marketing contexts to be able to satisfy customer needs and business goals in a constantly evolving environment.

This module is designed to enhance employability and career readiness of learners by helping them discover, understand, and make the most of their personal and professional strengths. Through an evidence-based strengths audit, reflective activities, and insights from organisational behaviour theory, students will develop a deeper self-awareness and recognise the unique value they can offer to employers and wider society. As part of their learning journey throughout the module, students will be encouraged to explore opportunities that allow them to build on their existing strengths and turn unrealised potential into tangible capabilities.

You will also have the opportunity to take an option module that broadens your skills or helps you gain more in-depth knowledge of your specialist area. Your option module may be a foreign language.

You will explore idea generation, develop your presentation skills and learn about marketing, finance and operations for small businesses. As part of The New Venture Creation module, you will come up with an idea, prepare a business plan and then pitch to a panel.

You also have the chance to take the Entrepreneurial Practice module that requires you to work with a team to raise money for a charity through a Crowd Funding campaign.

If you choose to study Project Management, you’ll examine the process of managing a project, evaluating the role of individuals in a company and how this can be used to plan a business better.

You will also have the opportunity to study a module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Core modules

Decision making is about making choices, often with incomplete or uncertain information and with competing goals. The ability to make effective decisions is a key management requirement which comprises a range of different skills. These skills are highly valued by employers because you are required across many business areas – from everyday tasks through to more complex projects or unforeseen situations. This module offers a practical introduction to decision-making concepts and techniques that are commonly used in organisations to make business decisions. It looks at the ‘psychology’ of choice – how intuition, analysis and judgement affect both individual and group decisions – and how to use a range of models and ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ decision making skills to choose between different courses of action.

The module has three key drivers: 1) Management of self and leadership of others in 21st century work and 2) Employability development through an applied Work Based Learning assessment. 3) Adapting leadership for Digital Business and HR professionals, Economists and Entrepreneurs. The evaluation of Work-Based Learning from work or volunteering, for at least 35 hours, will facilitate learners in applying general knowledge of leadership and management. This Employability related Module focuses on developing skills, business acumen and awareness, while offering support towards a placement next year and graduate applications at level 6.

This module introduces you to the foundations of entrepreneurship by supporting you to develop a Minimum Viable Proposition (MVP), a basic, testable version of a product or service that addresses a specific customer problem. Through this process, you begin shaping viable business ideas using research, creativity, and early-stage experimentation. You will learn how to explore real customer needs, test key assumptions, and adapt your propositions based on feedback from real or simulated markets. This module is designed to support students from all backgrounds, including those without prior entrepreneurial experience. You are invited to engage deeply with key theoretical concepts in entrepreneurship, such as value creation, opportunity recognition, innovation, market research, and environmental scanning. This theoretical grounding is paired with practical tools and methods that allow you to understand how entrepreneurial thinking can be applied in a variety of sectors and contexts.

Option modules

This module explores how to effectively manage the range of operations functions drawing from the traditional and digital perspectives. It considers the business process; the supply chain; operational strategic alignment; systems integration; and the management of information, quality, demand, capacity and resources. It covers aspects of electronic and mobile services, commerce and business; sustainability; innovation and design in products and services; and developments in technology and systems.

This module is an action-based entrepreneurial practice designed to generate revenue for a chosen organisation. You will be expected to fulfil the learning outcomes through the entrepreneurial project and written assessment. You'll also organise a revenue generation project with a team of students, which has to be approved by the module leader. The written reflection is a key component of your learning, as it evaluates incidents from the team project through academic research, demonstrating what's next and how, thereby achieving a full reflective learning cycle. This module provides a way for you to pursue enterprise and entrepreneurial skills through the process of entrepreneurial learning.

Project Management plays an ever more important role in the competitive world of modern businesses and organisations. Increasingly projects are being instigated across a wide range of initiatives to stay competitive and maintain standards. Innovation, development and design and marketing of new products and services all involve project management. Second year students interested in applying the theoretical, practical and technical skills of project management in a variety of business contexts are encouraged to apply and develop these important attributes.

Optional work placement/study abroad year

Between Year 2 and Year 3, you can take an optional work placement or study abroad year. The work placement year is a one-year full-time business work placement.

Past students have completed placements in a variety of SMEs and prestigious organisations, including Barclays Bank, British Airways, Disney UK, IBM and the NHS.

The study abroad years allows you to follow a programme of study at one of our partner institutions, giving you the opportunity to experiment life in another country and learn Business from a different cultural viewpoint.

You can also choose to split your year abroad into a first semester exchange and a second semester work placement, both conducted overseas.

Find out more about the costs involved in taking a study abroad or placement year.

We focus on how to commercialise an enterprise; this involves undertaking research to back up your ideas and developing a viable business model and working on developing a minimum viable product. We’ll look in-depth at current themes in entrepreneurship, such as the entrepreneurial mindset, family businesses and artificial intelligence. You’ll also explore the process of working in a team, applying personal and professional responsibility.

Your studies culminate with the Global Strategic Management module, designed to simulate as closely as possible the nature of strategic decision-making in the management of a commercial organisation. Businesses like OneofOne, Serena Sartorial and Yull Shoes were all initiated by our students. They have also developed businesses in consulting, IT, clothing, food and shoes.

You have the opportunity of studying one module from across the University, including a foreign language.

Core modules

Based on experiential learning techniques, this module progresses from the New Venture Creation module at Level 5 and is designed for you if you are focused on developing your own micro or small business or seeking to work entrepreneurially with small businesses. At Level 5, you'll have been encouraged to develop a minimum viable proposition (MVP). This module looks at how businesses can be scaled up and beyond the MVP stage. A range of business theories and concepts will be employed in a practical and critical way for you to develop your own potential to either create employment (as ‘job creators’) or gain employment (as ‘job seekers’). You'll be encouraged to initiate new practical and sustainable income streams for your entrepreneurial projects and be guided to consider different models of entrepreneurial development including both 'for profit' and 'social enterprise' routes. You'll consider the global context so that you can explore business opportunities in the country of your choice and be encouraged to align your businesses to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The development of the entrepreneurial mindset and the development of your communication and pitching skills using text, slides, and digital technology will be honed on this module. Similarly, critical research skills and problem-solving initiatives will be enhanced. You'll be guided to reflect critically on your experiences and investigate the collaborative nature of entrepreneurship in today's challenging environment. By the end of this module, you should have created a number of artefacts that can be used beyond the module, and you should have confidently and articulately developed a mindset that enables you to scale up your MVP, that stands scrutiny with investors and other identifiable stakeholders.

This module provides a nuanced look at a wide range of the latest contemporary issues and controversies in entrepreneurship taken from multidisciplinary perspectives. It offers the opportunity for you to conduct a piece of independent inquiry focusing on current issues in entrepreneurship on topics such as cognitive mindset of entrepreneurs, ethics and sustainability in enterprises and family business, corporate entrepreneurship, business start-up and innovation and emerging social values within the entrepreneurship context. The module also underlies key research skills for you to design a research study appropriately. You are expected to identify and critically explore the extant literature to structure the dissertation project and as to contribute in today’s business challenges, organisational practice, and social-business solutions. The module embraces the development of research skills, focused subject knowledge, critical analysis, and time management, of which are crucial for employability skills and competencies that are highly valued in the modern economy.

This module employs an active learning approach to encourage you to make concrete efforts to secure either graduate-level employment or pursue further study. The first assessment in professional practice explores the relevance of professional institutes and updates professional development plans. The second assessment focuses on leadership theory as applied to a public leader, and also through reflecting on leadership skills within a group task. Learning from the module will be used to develop your competencies in reflection and their development as reflective practitioners.

The Strategic Perspectives module integrates key strategic concepts and enables participants to develop a range of strategic management skills. You will be able to practise your ability to design, develop, implement and evaluate effective and sustainable business, corporate and/or international level strategies. You'll be introduced to the strategy process by analysing the internal environment of an organisation and the broader competitive environment of today’s turbulent economy. Moreover, together we will explore the importance of strategic leadership in organisations that aim to be successful in a complex and unpredictable environment in the long term. The module aims to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals during taught sessions as well as assessments.

Student work

A key strength of our programme is the interaction with entrepreneurs and business people. You’ll develop your entrepreneurial skills from people who’ve done it successfully themselves – from the likes of Dragons Den’s Levi Roots or Founder/Chairman of State of Flux Alan Day, to name just two of our key supporters. Students here had the opportunity to pick the brains of experienced businessmen and women when they participated in a World Café session and discussed various business ideas.
