This accessibility statement applies to the Eye Care Plan website. The portal is only available to University of Westminster colleagues. Please see the Safety, Health & Wellbeing intranet site (Eye Care Scheme, Accessing the Portal section) to access the portal. The Safety, Health & Wellbeing team is responsible for the digital accessibility of this website.

Using the website

This website is run by the University of Westminster. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, which means that you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (most well-known screen readers)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

For more advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability, visit the AbilityNet website.

Accessibility of the website

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible and have listed the issues according to level of impact, from high to low:

Higher priority issues

  • Forms without accessible names and associated labels might cause difficulty for screen reader users to understand the purpose of the input fields
  • Some interactive elements are not operable using a keyboard, which might block users from navigating the website
  • Some error messages are not associated with their relevant input fields. Screen reader users may not notice the association between the error text and the respective input element
  • Text with insufficient colour contrast can be difficult to read, especially for those with low vision, poor eyesight, or colour blindness
  • Some pages lack a heading structure, as heading semantics are not provided. Users cannot use the headings to understand the page structure and may struggle to navigate the page content

Lower priority issues

  • The site does not appropriately reflow content when viewed at 400% zoom. As a result, low vision users might miss some information and functionality
  • No skip link is available for users to bypass certain blocks of content

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are working to address the issues identified in the ‘Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations’ section above. We will prioritise our efforts to address the issues with the highest impact on users. We are working to develop an accessibility roadmap to show how and when we plan to improve accessibility on this website.

The University contracts with an external supplier GW Eye Care Plans to provide this website. Therefore, some of these issues are not within our control to address. We have raised these issues with the supplier and we will work with them to find solutions, where possible.

The supplier has advised that they have made the following changes to improve accessibility of the site. See the supplier’s accessibility statement for more information.

  • Defined language across portal to be the same as the current context
  • Changed some colours to improve contrast/readability:
  • Modified copyright statement in footer to use muted text
  • Added roles and aria labels to various parts of the portal
  • Added some aria labels to various elements in various pages
  • Added/updated tooltips (on hover) for some links to warn when they will open in a new tab
  • Increased font size on "promotions" labels in optician list and changed background colour to a slightly darker shade so the white text is easier to read
  • Changed application steps (LHS of apply page):
  • Changed "primary" buttons to be as easy to read as possible, while retaining an element of the client-specified colour:
  • Added error message when delivery method not selected on form submission
  • Changed flashing animation to a shake animation when Ts and Cs not checked
