Our degree courses with Foundation year offer the opportunity to prepare you for advanced study before you progress on to a full honours degree at the University of Westminster.

Whether you do not feel ready for degree-level study, don’t have the right qualifications, want to change your subject specialism or return to study after an absence from education, we aim to encourage a broad range of students to undertake our Foundation year in order to progress onto their full honours degree with us.

The Foundation year is designed to give you the opportunity to explore new ideas, opening up new perspectives on the key debates within your chosen field. Core modules accelerate your academic and professional development and you will also take modules from areas closely related to your chosen field, giving you the chance to develop a cross-disciplinary perspective on your course.

On successful completion of the Foundation year, you will be able to move on to study for the Business Management BA Honours degree.

Our highly flexible business degree is designed for those who want to thrive in a rapidly changing global, cultural and technological business world. You’ll develop the versatility, vision and wisdom that future business leaders and managers need.

With an emphasis on learning through practice, you will develop the breadth of knowledge, skills and capabilities to respond proactively and creatively to contemporary business issues and challenges. A large range of optional modules – covering everything from brands and business ethics to entertainment and sport – means you can tailor your studies each year.

You’ll also hear direct from industry practitioners, who will share their own experience of, for example, incorporating the principles of the circular economy in their businesses.

You will be encouraged to adopt an enquiring and critical approach to ideas and issues, developing the graduate attributes that employers value. For example, when learning how to evaluate company performance in sustainability, you will be tasked with investigating the big picture through news and contemporary journals, rather than relying solely on a company’s PR. You’ll also gain hands-on experience of common business computing and software, including Tableau Data Visualisation, FAME and the Microsoft Office suite.

All of this will help develop the necessary confidence and business acumen to set up your own business or contribute proactively to private business, public or ‘third’ sector organisations. Past graduates have found successful employment as management, marketing and advertising trainees, as trainee accountants and brand managers, recruitment consultants, retail managers and as assistants in market research, PR and global brand.

Modules

This degree will help you understand what makes a business tick and how to drive a business to succeed. In each year of study, you will take a combination of core and option modules. The flexible nature of the course allows you to choose topics that most suit your interests or career aspirations – even if these change as your course progresses. You can build your own general business degree or choose to specialise in subjects such as economics, entrepreneurship, human resource management, digital business or marketing.

Types of module

Our undergraduate courses comprise three types of module:

  • Core modules: compulsory modules that you must take each year
  • Option modules: modules that you can choose from to tailor your course to your interests, normally related to your subject area
  • Elective modules (also called 'Electives'): wider, interdisciplinary modules that you may be able to choose from to broaden your academic experience and skills – covering everything from learning a new language to building enterprise skills

There are no optional or elective modules offered at Level 3, as the focus is on the development of key academic skills through a broad understanding of Business and Management.

Core modules

Critical thinking is fundamental to our ability to progress in an increasingly complex and changing world. It is an essential skill across a range of academic and practice-based disciplines.

This module helps you understand the importance and function of critical thinking both at university and beyond. By working in partnership with academic staff and peers, you will explore how critical thinking aligns with disciplinary practices, shapes scholarly knowledge, and addresses inequalities. Through problem-posing education and anti-racist practices, you will engage with real-world problems, fostering the ability to create a more just and sustainable world.

This module immerses you in the dynamic realm of Digital Business, covering essential topics such as Mobile Commerce, E-Commerce, Social Commerce, Digital Business Models, Digital Strategies, the Internet of Things, Business Ethics, Digital Transformation, and emerging technologies like Blockchain and Cryptocurrency in Business. Through real-world case studies, you explore practical applications, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies shape and revolutionise modern business landscapes.

This module is designed to engage you in current debates about global issues within the business and management arena. The module will introduce you to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and will explore global issues such as access to global resources, commodity chains and sustainable business practice. The module will also explore cross-cultural issues within the global business environment. You will learn how to provide evidence through research in current debates in sustainable practice in business.

This module introduces the underpinning mathematical processes and concepts used in your further studies on BA Business Management. The syllabus comprises topics such as data structures, data analysis and their mathematical representation in order to have a foundation in business data analysis. The ability to analyse data is essential within the business and management discipline, ensuring you can make decisions using the correct information.

This module serves as the foundation for understanding key business and management principles within your course. It offers valuable insights into organisational resources, emphasising their significance to an organisation and the necessity of effective management. This module is crucial for your preparation for a career in Business and Management, as it provides a comprehensive understanding of organisational operations and management practices, including sustainability considerations. It ensures that you gain clarity on how organisations function and how they can be sustainably managed.

This module introduces you to the key academic, professional, and personal skills essential for success at university. It encourages good practices in writing, presentation, and time management, while also fostering reflection to help you build confidence as you transition to higher education. Open to all students enrolled in courses delivered through Westminster Foundation Pathways, the module provides a creative and supportive environment where you can reflect on and develop your academic and professional journey. You'll work with specialist facilitators who play a crucial role in guiding your academic and professional development.

With a focus on managing academic choices in a higher education setting, the module emphasises the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using methodologies that prioritise equality, diversity, and inclusion. Through these lenses, you'll explore topics that prepare you to address real-world challenges as highlighted in the SDGs in a socially conscious, inclusive, and responsible manner.

You are introduced to the functions of business organisations, the broader business environment, and key management skills and competences, including information gathering and analysis, accounting, economics, marketing and organisational behaviour. We consider business organisations – their purposes, structures and governance in a global context, together with cultural differences and ethical constraints. You’ll be introduced to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, through case studies, discover how environmental, social and governance issues have affected companies including Divine Chocolate, for example. Drawing on real-life data from FAME, you’ll be tasked with analysing the financial performance of an organisation of your choice.

Core modules

On this module you will gain a fundamental grounding in a wide range of accounting and financial issues. You will also have the opportunity to develop decision-making skills that are essential for managers through the analysis and interpretation of financial information. You will appreciate this module because you will gain a desirable skillset recognised by employers including analytical skills using a variety of techniques that will keep you interested and engaged throughout the module.

This module introduces the important roles of information and analytics in the business decision making context. It takes you on a journey through responsible acquisition, analysis, presentation and preservation of information. Digital business software and its practical applications in finding, analysing and communicating data and information will be explored. Understanding of information flows within organisations and the management and operations functions and the systems needed to support decision making securely and ethically will be developed by a mix of hands on, classroom based learning and self-directed study.

The module is designed to facilitate understanding of the behaviour of others in organisations and to improve self-insight. It draws on the theory and literature of Organisational Behaviour to stimulate awareness of the key challenges and factors that affect behaviour in organisations.  The module promotes a challenging and critical perspective, drawing on organisational examples and personal experiences, to help you to develop essential skills for your future success.

The module offers you the opportunity to learn how global economies work and the general context in which the business organisations operate. You'll analyse the purpose, structures and ethical and environmental constraints faced by organisations across different industries. At the same time, you'll study the cultural differences within and between business organisations and as part of the learning process you'll develop research, team work and communication skills.

This module aims to provide you with an introduction to the role of marketing in the organisation and the key concepts that underpin the activities of the marketer. It aims to provide you with an understanding of the marketing environment and the importance of gathering appropriate information to inform marketing decision-making. The module considers the marketing process, examining consumer behaviour and decision-making, and understanding the marketing mix and its application and adaptation within different marketing contexts to satisfy customer needs and business goals in a constantly evolving environment.  

In addition, this module emphasises the significance of sustainability and ethics in marketing. You'll explore how ethical considerations and sustainable practices can be integrated into marketing strategies, ensuring that marketing activities not only drive business success but also contribute positively to society and the environment. Through this comprehensive approach, you'll be equipped to make responsible marketing decisions that balance profitability with social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

You will also have the opportunity to take an option module that broadens your skills or helps you gain more in-depth knowledge of your specialist area. Your option module may be a foreign language.

You will investigate and learn how businesses operate, looking at how people are managed, how you manage business operations and how managers make key decisions. We analyse business operations from both traditional and digital perspectives: the business process; the supply chain; systems integration; and the management of information, quality, demand, capacity and resources. This covers aspects of electronic and mobile services, commerce and business; innovation and design in products and services; and developments in technology and systems. You will select three optional modules.

Core modules

The module has two key drivers: 1) Leadership of others and development of yourself in 21st century work and 2) Employability development through an applied Work Based Learning assessment. The evaluation of Work Based Learning from work or volunteering, for at least 35 hours, will allow you to apply general knowledge of leadership and management. This employability related module focuses on developing leadership and employability skills, business acumen and awareness, while offering support towards a placement next year and graduate applications at level 6.

This module explores how to effectively manage the range of operations functions drawing from the traditional and digital perspectives. It considers the business process; the supply chain; operational strategic alignment; systems integration; and the management of information, quality, demand, capacity and resources. It covers aspects of electronic and mobile services, commerce and business; sustainability; innovation and design in products and services; and developments in technology and systems.

Cities of the world with their growing economies and populations are the arena of turbulent and contradictory interplay between drivers influencing profitable business opportunities, social equity and environmental stability. This module uses cities as a ‘field of enquiry’ for exploring both global and local issues of urban development and sustainability in the context of varied socio-economic, political and natural environments. Module introduces both theory and practice of managing ‘profit-people-planet’ conundrum using case studies from different parts of the world.

Option modules

The module introduces and develops your understanding of key concepts and features of corporate governance. You will develop an understanding of the theories of corporate governance and obtain comprehensive knowledge of the UK system of corporate governance and its development. You will also learn the guidelines and regulations which corporation must follow in relation to corporate governance.

This module is an action-based entrepreneurial practice designed to generate revenue for a chosen organisation. You will be expected to fulfil the learning outcomes through the entrepreneurial project and written assessment. You'll also organise a revenue generation project with a team of students, which has to be approved by the module leader. The written reflection is a key component of your learning, as it evaluates incidents from the team project through academic research, demonstrating what's next and how, thereby achieving a full reflective learning cycle. This module provides a way for you to pursue enterprise and entrepreneurial skills through the process of entrepreneurial learning.

Understanding ethics in marketing is essential for strategic decision-making and business success. At the level of the individual, there is a need to develop skills in seeking out and evaluating the options available. At the level of the company, there is a need to understand the competitive environment, to seize market opportunities where they exist, and to be productive. The module will address marketing thinking and techniques with specific reference to ethics in marketing. It will cover such areas as Cause-Related Marketing (CRM) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Decision making is about making choices, often with incomplete or uncertain information and with competing goals. The ability to make effective decisions is a key management requirement which comprises a range of different skills. These skills are highly valued by employers because they are required across many business areas – from everyday tasks through to more complex projects or unforeseen situations. This module offers a practical introduction to decision-making concepts and techniques that are commonly used in organisations to make business decisions. It looks at the ‘psychology’ of choice – how intuition, analysis and judgement affect both individual and group decisions – and how to use a range of models and ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ decision-making skills to choose between different courses of action.

Project Management plays an ever more important role in the competitive world of modern businesses and organisations. Increasingly projects are being instigated across a wide range of initiatives to stay competitive and maintain standards. Innovation, development and design and marketing of new products and services all involve project management. Second year students interested in applying the theoretical, practical and technical skills of project management in a variety of business contexts are encouraged to apply and develop these important attributes.

This module analyses the historical development and contemporary role of sport media in the marketing of online and offline sport offerings. Contextually, it critically reviews the impact of the media upon the growth of sport and evaluates the part played by broadcast and online social media in the evolution of sports marketing. The module will build on contemporary marketing theory and apply it in a sports context, examining the subject within a broad framework of sport that covers both commercial and non-commercial sports from the live and non-live offerings that sport media stakeholders provide. As such, you'll look at the application of marketing concepts in sport, and in particular, targeted market segmentation and the roles of branding and sponsorship. The module also explores concepts of gamification, eSports, rule changes and identity/social issues, all influenced by the role sport media has played in the marketing of sport.

This module develops an in-depth understanding of all aspects relating to the creation, maintenance and success of web-enabled businesses. It also helps you gain a practical insight into key strategic considerations when developing or working within a web-enabled business. In addition, the module provides insights into identifying, modelling, analysing and enhancing online customer journeys. Finally, you'll gain the knowledge of the inner workings of an e-commerce organisation, including aligning web presence with business objectives and strategy.

You will also have the opportunity to study a module from other faculties of the University, including a foreign language.

Alternatively, in place of the option modules listed above, you may be able to take the WBS Study Abroad Experience (subject to eligibility) or the WBS Work Experience.

Optional work placement/study abroad year

Between Years 2 and 3, you can take an optional work placement or study year abroad. The work placement year is a one-year full-time business work placement. Past students have completed placements in a variety of small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and prestigious organisations, including Barclays Bank, British Airways, Disney UK, IBM and the National Health Service (NHS). The study abroad year allows you to follow a programme of study at one of our partner institutions, giving you an opportunity to experience life in another country and learn Business from a different cultural viewpoint.

You can also choose to split your year abroad into a first semester exchange and a second semester work placement, both conducted overseas.

Developing your specialist knowledge further through optional modules, you will learn to apply critical and reflective approaches to help explore the challenges facing organisations at a strategic level and from an organisational perspective, with a view of the broader competitive environment of today’s turbulent economy. In doing so, you will undertake research on a topic of your choice – anything from e-sport business development to environmental sustainability in business. Your studies culminate with the Global Strategic Management module, designed to simulate as closely as possible the nature of strategic decision-making in the management of a commercial organisation. You will analyse market, financial and human resource information on a weekly basis, making complex decisions.

Core modules

The module offers you the opportunity to carry out a piece of sustained independent study focussing on contemporary issues in business management. You are expected to identify, explore and critically evaluate a current business issue within one of the issues given and present this in the form of a dissertation. Small group and individual sessions during the module provide you with the opportunity to review your understanding of the research process by specialised supervisors. The module also enables your writing skills to be developed in a professional and academic manner. The module has benefits in terms of employability as it demonstrates the development of self-motivation and time-management skills and enables you to show-case your knowledge and capabilities to an employer.

This module is a core employability module for the BA Business Management course. It promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and encourages personal and professional transformation. Active learning strategies ensure all students are supported in preparing for graduate-level employment or further study. The module supports leadership aspirations and prepares students for the new world of work, grounded in the principles of responsible management.

This module integrates key strategic concepts, enabling participants to develop a range of strategic management skills. You will be able to practice your ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate effective and sustainable business, corporate, and/or international-level strategies. Additionally, you will be introduced to the strategy process by analysing the internal environment of an organisation and the broader competitive environment of today’s turbulent economy. Moreover, together we will explore the importance of strategic leadership in organisations that aim to be successful in a complex and unpredictable environment in the long term.

The module will provide you with a wide-ranging knowledge of modern banking theories and and bank functions in practice. It focuses on issues related to banking structure, regulations, lending policies and procedures and risk management. These banking themes are addressed from a global perspective.

Digital Analytics is a fast developing area within many organisations, where there is a great need to understand and analyse the online/offline behaviour of consumers, markets and competitors and data generated from various business processes. In this module, you'll explore social media analytics, web analytics (WA) and business intelligence (BI).

This module focuses on organisations operating in many countries (MNCs). It examines the challenges facing them in a globalised marketing environment and the tools they use to plan, implement, manage and control their marketing activities.

An excellent module for anyone considering a career in Digital Marketing, the wider marketing communications industry or setting up your own online business. It creates an opportunity for you to participate in appraising the online presence of brands and identifying the underlying campaign strategies. You will carry out your own research, learn to reflect and give feedback to your peers and write and present succinctly – a critical skill required in industry.

Are trade in services agreements more important than trade in goods agreements? Who wins and who loses from a trade war? Are countries that leave a trade bloc better off? This module aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of current issues and theoretical debates in international trade, together with their policy implications. Specific attention will be paid to examining the process of globalisation in trade in goods and services, and considering the extent to which barriers have been eroded through regional and multilateral agreements. On completion of the module, you'll have developed an awareness of the process of international trade policy formulation.

The module is aimed at students interested in developing their project and programme management skills and knowledge. This module will provide an overview of the fundamentals of project management and will then explore challenges of strategic and international project/programme management.

The purpose of the module is to investigate the role of social media platforms in an organisational context and explore how their adoption fits into operations and supports business objectives. The module will enable you to tailor social media to given business needs and develop strategies for successfully using social platforms in proactive and reactive environments.

Senior Lecturer

Kamala Balu is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational and Organisational Psychology at Westminster Business School and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She teaches on a range of undergraduate modules and has led various modules in subjects including Work Psychology, Assessment at Work, Perspectives on Behaviour in Organisations and Business Communications. She is the Westminster Business School eMentoring Coordinator and the Course Leader for the BA Business Management with Foundation course.  Kamala is currently module leader for two core level 4 modules in ‘Behaviour in Organisations’ and ‘Introduction to Organisational Behaviour for Marketing’ and a project supervisor to Postgraduate students on the MA Management, MA Human Resource Management and MSc International Business courses.

Senior Lecturer

Beverley graduated from London Guildhall University with a degree in Communications in 1998. She is a Fellow of the HEA and holds an MA in Education. Beverley has worked at the University of Westminster for over 12 years leading and teaching on a wide range of modules from the Business Management BA course.

The course fee applies to the Foundation year of your degree programme. When you progress from the Foundation year (level 3) to the degree (level 4), the fees will increase to match our standard degree-level fees for level 4 onwards.

Please note that if you defer your place, the first year’s tuition fees will be those of the academic year in which you enrol, which may be higher than the fee shown for this year.

The Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) is an annual international meeting attended by more than 1,500 students from all over the world, in which they debate the major issues of the international political agenda. The conferences take place in New York, Emirates, Rome and Barcelona. Westminster Model United Nations Society UNA-UK is one of over 40 youth UNAs at universities across the UK.

Founded in 1995, Westminster Business Consultants is a student-run consultancy service affiliated to the University of Westminster, which offers management and strategic consultancy, specialising in market research, market analysis, brand strategy, feasibility studies, business development, performance improvement and product development. It works with a diverse clientele of emerging start-ups, SMEs and large corporations at home and overseas, giving students opportunities to gain extensive knowledge and experience in various industries.

How you'll be taught

Teaching methods across all our undergraduate courses focus on active student learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based and blended learning, and where appropriate practical application. Learning typically falls into three broad categories:

  • Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
  • Placement: placement hours normally include placement opportunities, but may also include live projects or virtual activity involving employers
  • Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision

Our Marylebone Campus has benefitted from a multi-million-pound refurbishment resulting in new workshops, digital studios and development of the Marylebone Library.
