Core modules

This module takes the theoretical knowledge acquired throughout the student's academic journey to date and provides some key practical supplementary information, empowering them to organise an original live event. The Module Leader will guide the choice of event and, working collaboratively, students conceive an event concept aligned with fundamental event management principles, with a view to developing their event planning, execution, and evaluation skills.

Continuous formative assessment ensures teams advancement, supported by mentorship from staff/industry professionals and dynamic tutorials. Supervised by a dedicated event tutor, some work beyond standard hours is expected.

The module enables students to review their known competencies and identify their preferred direction of study and career path, as they move through to the final stages of their degree journey.

The module considers the range of tasks and considerations that would be undertaken by an event manager in order to develop an event concept from the strategic plan to delivery. Significantly, it acknowledges the commercial parameters and role played by stakeholders, which contribute towards the formulation of the event’s objectives and strategic direction.

Key contemporary issues such as project management, risk, sustainability, inclusivity and CSR are embedded in the exploration of the event planning and management process. The module provides the theory for and works in parallel with the core module, Delivering the Event.

This module focuses on the practical application of marketing principles exclusively within the event industry. It delves into implementing the marketing mix within event contexts, covering product elements, both traditional and digital marketing communications, and the efficient management of people and processes. Through interactive teaching sessions, students engage in a wide range of marketing approaches tailored to diverse event scenario aligned with the event-centric approach of the course.

Option modules

This module is an action-based entrepreneurial practice designed to generate revenue for a chosen organisation. You will be expected to fulfil the learning outcomes through the entrepreneurial project and written assessment. You'll also organise a revenue generation project with a team of students, which has to be approved by the module leader. The written reflection is a key component of your learning, as it evaluates incidents from the team project through academic research, demonstrating what's next and how, thereby achieving a full reflective learning cycle. This module provides a way for you to pursue enterprise and entrepreneurial skills through the process of entrepreneurial learning.

Approximately 1.3 million business events are staged in the UK each year, including exhibitions, trade fairs, conferences, award ceremonies, product launches, team-building events, and corporate hospitality events. This module considers the role, format and design of these events within the dynamic and often challenging business environment, which increasingly demands a shift from traditional to transformational live activations.

You'll study practical aspects of event delivery, including content creation and course development, sponsorship management and evaluation, as well as consider contemporary debates around the significance of human-to-human engagement, the need to embed sustainability into event delivery and the future of live business events in the digital age.

The module will focus on skills and knowledge to develop an event production concept. This will specifically include aspects of live event production, such as lighting, sound, audio visual, props and staging elements, as well as soft technologies. The assessments will be based on creating and presenting a production concept, and to critically reflect on the production process as preparation for the staging of live events.

Maintaining the right balance of products, developing them, recognising when to re-vitalise or withdraw them, and managing the brands you carry are complex and critical processes if customer expectations are to be met. Brands, and the products that carry them, are embedded into modern life. Organisations use them to compete in the marketplace and meet their strategic and corporate goals.

This is an excellent module for anyone considering a career in Marketing, or the wider marketing communications industry and is suitable preparation as part of the Digital Marketing Institute and IDM qualifications. It will enable you to become familiar with and apply social media concepts and best practices to both organic and paid marketing activities on key platforms in order to run successful campaigns that yield ROI and meet business objectives. You'll also be creating and publishing content for a real company using a simulation tool (Mimic Social) to run social media and influencer campaigns.

Alternatively, in place of the option modules listed above, you may be able to take the Westminster Business School (WBS) Study Abroad Experience (subject to eligibility) or the WBS Work Experience.

Electives

You will also have the opportunity to study an elective module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Between Years 2 and 3 (Levels 5 and 6), you may choose to undertake either a professional placement year in the UK or an international experience year.

Professional Experience

You’ll have the option to take a placement year in industry. During the year, you will identify skills’ goals to work towards achieving whilst on placement; carry out research to develop an awareness of the event sector they are working in, using a range of data sources; and familiarise themselves with techniques and processes, which help effectively deliver key initiatives and business objectives.

International Experience

Alternatively, you may choose to undertake an international experience year at one of our partner overseas institutions. You’ll study and reside in the country of a host institution during the year. The content of your study is agreed through a Learning Agreement between you, the home institution and Westminster Business School.

In Year 3, you’ll demonstrate advanced skills in critically reviewing and applying a comprehensive body of knowledge related to the global event industry. You’ll excel in well-researched decision-making, evaluating concepts and drawing evidence from diverse sources to navigate complex situations.

Core modules

Ethical Leadership introduces professional ethics to the production of events and the moral decision-making process within the profession. The module addresses the key theoretical concepts of integrity, providing students a more comprehensive perspective that enables critical thinking and discussions about ethics and society, morality, the ideas of values and the impacts on effective leadership in events. Students will know how to approach ethical leadership that embodies Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) practices, ensuring fair treatment and opportunity for all within the workplace.

The Final Event Project module enables students to embark on an extended period of detailed and individual study with the guidance of a supervisor/mentor. The module draws on the knowledge and skills gained throughout the student's programme of study. Much of the learning takes place as the student completes a flexible assessment, either a research project on a chosen academic topic or a creative event project addressing a defined business problem. All routes require students to review the literature and to design and carry out primary research to gain insights into the problem prior to defining and developing the solution.

This module focuses on enhancing students’ employability with the opportunity to respond to a live consultancy project as briefed by an event organisation. Building on existing competencies and knowledge, the module enables students to explore and reflect on their own skill set while considering a contemporary industry issue.

Students work in a team to produce a client-facing solution and then attend a meeting to justify, discuss and develop the recommendations made. The module encourages students to consider how they present themselves and communicate within the professional environment. The task output is then used as a basis for students to reflect on their own skills and prepare for future employment with the creation of a professional portfolio and career plan.

This module integrates key strategic concepts and enables students to develop a range of specific management skills required by event industry leaders. It will allow them to practice their ability to design, develop, and evaluate effective event strategies. Students will be introduced to the strategy process by analysing the internal environment of an organisation and the broader competitive environment. They will be challenged to consider the perspectives and contribution of different stakeholders to the success of an event, and they will learn to address complex challenges with a sustainable mindset.

Option modules

This module empowers you with the competencies (knowledge, values and skills) necessary to optimally utilise entrepreneurship as a way to economic wealth and growth. You'll develop the necessary competencies such as knowledge, values and skills to be entrepreneurial at different levels of management in a variety of environments.

As a successful learner, you'll be able to act as a change agent, ensuring that business entities not only have the competitive edge through new products, services and processes, but are also more effective and efficient. Entrepreneurial leaders will contribute to employee satisfaction and retention.

By completing this module, you'll have the ability to develop your entrepreneurial skills, so that you have the potential to become an efficient and effective leader in the business environment.

This module provides a comprehensive and holistic understanding of luxury brands, grounded in academic theories of luxury and luxury consumption. You will focus on understanding the differences in the management strategies for a luxury brand in a cross-cultural setting where luxury goods and experiential services are available.

Perspectives on luxury brand and product management will be explored to ensure the essence of luxury brands is understood. Luxury consumption from the consumer's perspective, including perception and consumption behaviour, will also be explored to determine the characteristics of luxury brand consumers across different cultures and markets. The analysis of market and consumer trends plays a vital role for luxury brands to adapt in this turbulent marketplace.

Sponsorship plays an increasingly important role in the organisation and funding of sport. By critically examining the relationships and the way the sponsor, the sponsored organisation and the media work in partnership, the module will provide a contextual overview of the global sports sponsorship market and critically evaluate the component parts of the business of sponsorship, the motivations of participants and how they successfully interact. Through the analyses of live case studies, you will develop creative solutions to real-world sponsorship challenges. This will equip you with the skills to apply appropriate theory when confronted with the uncertainty and complexity of unfamiliar practical challenges and understand how culture and community may affect, and be affected, by the impacts of sponsorship.
