Course summary

Tourism is an increasingly important part of our lives, and the tourism industry is one of the few global industries forecast to grow in the long term. Managing this rapidly growing industry to meet visitors' demands in a sustainable way is exciting and challenging. This long-established course will give you the knowledge, analytical abilities and skills you need to make a career as a tourism professional.

Annual student feedback for this course is very positive, with teaching, staff contact and course content receiving particular praise. This reflects the teaching team's efforts to provide a valuable and effective course as well as a supportive, friendly and stimulating environment for your studies.

Members of the teaching team have published academic texts used by students of tourism at many UK universities. You'll benefit from access to these texts and the insights of these authors. Furthermore, staff teaching on the course are active researchers, and their teaching is informed by both their own research and their engagement with industry.

You'll learn about the nature and characteristics of tourism and explore how it can be marketed, managed and planned, examining cases from around the world. Your management and entrepreneurial skills will be developed to assist you in finding employment in many different parts of this dynamic and growing industry.

A range of option modules allows you to focus on your particular interests, and to explore the links between the different aspects of tourism. A dissertation gives you the chance to apply your learning to develop in-depth, specialist knowledge of a tourism topic of your choice.

Course structure

The following modules are indicative of what you'll study on this course.

You'll be able to choose three option modules, a selection of which are listed below. Please note that we cannot guarantee all option modules will run each year, as availability will depend on demand.

Core modules

The Research Consultancy Project [Project] enables you to embark on an extended period of detailed and individual study on a tourism [Tourism Management] or events [Event Design and Management] topic with the guidance of a supervisor. The Project provides an opportunity for you to either [a] research a subject of particular interest, which you will investigate rigorously and in-depth, or [b] address a defined business problem that requires a creative solution. The module is designed to help you review the literature, develop the necessary research, analyse data and present recommendations.

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the tourism system, examining its components, dynamics, and interrelationships. You will explore theoretical frameworks and contemporary issues, gaining insights into tourism stakeholders and global implications of tourism development, including alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Emphasis is placed on analysing tourism destinations, patterns of demand, and influencing factors. The module also examines the interdependence of tourism system components and their internal and external influences. By the end of the module, you will be equipped to critically analyse and engage with key aspects of tourism in a global context.

This module develops an in-depth understanding of the design and marketing of successful tourism experiences from the perspective of the supplier, the consumer, and the host community and environment, with particular focus on sustainability and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in a tourism experiences context. You examine experiential factors and the extended marketing mix to understand the whole customer journey from market segmentation to the creation of high levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty. The module expands your commercial awareness and creativity through practical activities in class, site visits and practical assessments which simulate marketing activities.

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the sustainable visitor economy through the lens of community planning and its core principles. You will delve into concepts of localism, well-being, empowerment, prosperity, and community-driven regeneration, examining real-life case studies and engaging with industry experts to evaluate and enhance community-driven visitor economy initiatives. The module examines themes of public-private partnerships, community-driven regeneration, resilient destinations, and strategic Destination Management Plans. Practical learning activities, including site research, surveys, interviews with local residents and businesses, guided tours, guest speakers from the communities and local authorities, and community events, will deepen your understanding and prepare you to propose innovative, sustainable strategies that address social, economic, and environmental challenges while promoting inclusivity and prosperity.

This module will develop your understanding of the multiple interconnected issues (climate change, environmental degradation, extreme weather events; geo politics; AI) that destinations face. It will also explore context and industry specific responses and how you can adapt and develop resilience personally, within cross-cultural teams and organisations to respond to these challenges.

Option modules

The module explores the demand for air travel and prospects for the future. You will evaluate the economic and commercial performance of airline and airport operators, as well as examining the broader impacts of air travel on the economy and the environment.

This module aims to give you the opportunity to gain in-depth real-world and theoretical knowledge of global event management. It focuses on sports events and cultural festivals that have a global status. You are expected to learn the complexities of the bid process and the concepts and principles relevant to planning, managing and implementing a global event. The module also analyses the different ways that events are produced and consumed internationally and the various ways that globalisation has affected this sector.

This module offers you a comprehensive understanding of crisis management principles and resilience strategies. It covers how to identify potential crises, develop crisis response plans, and build resilience in tourism destinations and events. The module emphasises real-world applications, including analysis of case studies and engagement with industry experts. Themes will include environmental and climate crisis, natural disasters, financial crises, crisis in labour and migration, human rights, health-related and terrorist crisis. You will be prepared to lead change through crisis, create the right environments for creativity and innovation as a response to crisis, and manage business continuity and communications.

This module draws on the analysis of events using place-based and urban design perspectives. The overall aim of the module is to help you understand the way that events affect spaces/places and, in turn, how spaces/places affect events. The module covers different geographical scales: the first part analyses how specific sites are used for the staging of events and how programmes can be designed to maximise the contribution of the space to the events, as well as the contributions of the events to the spaces. The second part is more broadly focused at the citywide, regional and national scales. The module supports you in understanding how event portfolios and related strategies can help places achieve sustainable development goals.

This module explores the complex and fascinating relationship between cities and the visitor economy, focusing on how tourism shapes – and is at the same time shaped by – urban landscapes and experiences. The emerging idea of regenerative tourism is used as a starting point to analyse the multiple ways in which tourism contributes to the transformation of urban environments. In this module, you will also debate and learn to critically analyse the factors causing some of the problems caused by tourism in cities. A variety of approaches to tourism management and regenerative tourism adopted by different urban destinations across the globe are considered.

This module explores how events can build community networks, relationships and opportunities. It seeks to understand the social value of events and how they can contribute to the places and people that are engaged in their production and consumption. This module considers how events provide an environment for the community to come together, build interactions as well as develop their quality of life. We consider a diverse set of concepts that look beyond the immediate events management literature to fully situate events within the context of lived experience, learning about different cultures and how events and leisure can result in bettering our understanding of society. The content of the syllabus draws on the critical turn in event studies; it is dynamic and partly reflects timely issues affecting and shaping the events sector.

This module develops your understanding of heritage sites by exploring contemporary issues, mapping techniques, and resources. It encourages appreciation of both tangible and intangible heritage and fosters critical thinking about preservation and interpretation practices. The module explores representations of diverse traditions and cultures through teamwork and reflective practices. The module provides you with the skills and attributes necessary for cross-sector projects in the workplace.

This module provides background on environmental policy and climate change. It sets out the theoretical framework to start with, and then the international context for sustainable development, environmental assessment, energy efficiency and climate change resilience. It explores implications for the built environment in a range of development contexts, includes analysis of key policy concerns and planning and design responses comparatively across different institutional and cultural contexts. It also reviews techniques for assessing the impacts of development and examines the role that effective environmental strategies and policies in planning and related fields can help you pursue to reach sustainable development.
