Course summary
Our International Business and Management with Professional Experience MSc is a two-year course that combines academic study with extended professional practice.
As part of the course, you will study the same modules as our one-year MSc and undertake a placement or internship of at least 500 hours to gain industry experience, build connections and enhance your employment prospects.
This course will help you advance your knowledge of management theory and practice and build the analytical, strategic and leadership skills needed for senior roles in today’s globally connected business environment. The course will also enable you to strengthen your critical thinking, analytical and communication capabilities, enabling you to make evidence-based decisions and solve complex business and management problems with confidence.
The key areas of study range from Business Strategy, Sustainability, Branding and Marketing, Digital Technologies, Leadership and Managing People. You will explore how business challenges intersect with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, preparing you to lead responsibly and make a meaningful impact.
At Westminster, learning is practical, active and interactive. Through live case studies, business simulations, real-world projects and guest lectures from industry experts, you will be able to apply your knowledge in ways that mirror professional practice.

Course structure
Over two years, you will study modules in international business and management, combining lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies and industry guest speakers. We will provide you with opportunities to learn from and engage in research and collaborative activities, applying theory to real-world contexts.
A distinctive element is the 60-credit professional work experience module, requiring a minimum of 500 hours in a workplace setting. This structure integrates academic study with practical application, enabling you to critically engage with academic learning while gaining substantial professional experience to enhance your career prospects.

Core modules
This module aims to develop students' knowledge and competence of the research process and the application of research methods in the area of Business and Management. It consists of formulating a focused research topic, an overview of methodology, critical literature review, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the contexts within which different methods are useful and how they should be applied in practice, and finally research ethics. Students will be challenged to conceptualise either primary or secondary research designs and present a research proposal which feeds into the final project.

This module introduces the student to the concepts and role of creativity in innovation. It explores creative techniques to develop creative and thinking skills with a view to make students better learners, through practical application and activities, both individually and in teams. The module shows students the importance of team engagement and individuals’ contribution to successful team creativity and innovation within an organisation. The unique value added for this module is to introduce experiential team learning philosophy into a unique disruptive model of creativity enhancement, that weaves together hands-on learning through real world problem solving through business challenges in collaboration with entrepreneurs. Team entrepreneurship is central to this module, creating a powerful learning journey that transforms individuals into collaborative entrepreneurs and team innovators.

In today's interconnected world, successful marketing strategies must transcend cultural boundaries to effectively reach diverse audiences. This module explores the complexities and nuances of marketing in a global context. The module emphasises crafting inclusive minimum viable brands (MVBs) for international branding and communications contexts. Uncovering international audiences and translating customer research insights into validated ideas for international brands, campaigns, and products. It critiques debates on diversity (EDI), ethics, and legal issues, especially relevant to global South entrepreneurship. It also discusses AI, UX/UI, VR, and AR in a digital context. By the end of the module, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate cultural differences and leverage them to create effective marketing strategies that resonate with global audiences. They emerge with the skills and mindset necessary to excel in today's multicultural marketplace.

You will undertake an integrated placement or internship in a professional environment, giving you the chance to put your learning into practice. This module is designed to help you understand the needs and expectations of the workplace through direct experience. The University of Westminster’s Zone29, the new nine-storey home of careers and enterprise, may provide some support to gain experience, build skills and discover job opportunities. However, given that these opportunities are highly competitive and not guaranteed, you are strongly urged to independently search for external placement or internship opportunities in the organisation or sector you prefer to work in, gain professional skills and knowledge through hands-on tasks, and reflect on how you have developed new expertise along the way. This may also provide you with an opportunity to conduct your empirical research in your selected organisation, where your placement/internship takes place, and facilitate access to primary data that you will need to collect for your MSc project.

Sustainability is a broad concept that goes beyond considering the environmental impact of business to include economic and social issues such as inclusivity and diversity. The focus of sustainability is the creation of a good quality of life for current and future generations by achieving a balance between economic prosperity, ecosystem viability and social justice.
This module explores the challenges and opportunities that societal and environmental issues create for organisations. Students will explore sustainable management in all its dimensions, learning from real-life examples, examining key problems and developing solutions to lead their organisations towards sustainable change that aligns businesses' long-term goals with the broader expectations of society in a globalised, connected world.
To help students understand the systematic and organisational role of sustainability in any organisation, the module will give an overview of major sustainability issues and practices according to the following 3 dimensions: environmental, social and financial.

This module involves strategic thinking that draws together all aspects of business & management. It applies strategic concepts and systems thinking to help students to understand how to manage businesses in a complex global business environment. The module content also apply contemporary strategic management theory and concepts to the critical appraisal of international business scenarios and cases. Students will learn how to develop sustainable business models and solutions in a complex and changing world and to think like business analysts, management consultants & executive decision-makers.

This module is concerned with both practical and theoretical issues related to the international macro economic environment and financial markets. It is designed to provide an in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of the role of financial institutions in the international financial markets, the structure and operation of foreign exchange and interest rate markets, and associated financial instruments such as hedging and derivatives used to mitigate risk and exposure. Module will also explore theories of capital movement, foreign direct investment, as well as international diversification and portfolio investment. It will cover some recent developments such as the growth of debt, international debt crisis, sovereign defaults and the impact of policies such as capital controls. Module provides an understanding of time value of money and modern invest appraisal techniques for the evaluation of investment projects.

Global supply chains make trade a critical engine for economic growth. With products being assembled in a large number of countries and services delivered digitally, even small changes to trade policies can have a major impact. This module aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of current issues and theoretical debates in international trade, together with their policy implications. Specific attention will be paid to examining the process of globalisation in trade in goods and services through applying real-world data and considering the extent to which barriers have been eroded through regional and multilateral agreements. On completion of the module students will be able to comprehend the process of international trade policy formulation and critically evaluate trade issues.

This module takes a global, multi-disciplinary approach to cultivating inclusive leaders who contribute to personal and societal well-being. It emphasises critical reflection on the process of leadership and aims to identify personal learning and leadership development needs.

The MSc IBM Project module offers learners the opportunity to independently research topics in international business and management, such as international trade, responsible leadership, and financial markets. Students develop specialist knowledge and transferable
skills like time management, and communication. Students analyse business issues in a given context and provide rigorous recommendations. The project can be an academic research project or a work-based consultancy project, requiring an internship or employment. The number of hours that international students may be allowed to work will be subject to
home office rules.

Student work
Sustainability has become one of the key principles of contemporary management, which is why students were given the opportunity to work with the King’s Cross-based enterprise Alara Wholefoods. As part of their marketing assessment, they collaborated with Alara on a live case study to investigate new export opportunities in one of three countries with no existing market presence, namely France, India and Uzbekistan.
Module Leader explains: “Gaining real-life experience of actual business problems is a key part of the International and Business Management MSc. Alara Wholefoods is an excellent company to be involved with, as they challenge conventional business thinking. The students will learn a lot about sustainability and the challenges of ‘green’ marketing through this experience.”

Teaching and assessment
Your learning experience is designed to provide both a practical and theoretical understanding of people management approaches and their impact on organisational behaviour.
To assist the learning experience, we provide reading lists, lecture and seminar materials in advance via Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. Where possible, lectures are recorded using specialist software and similar tools to make sure you can really listen to what is said in class and don’t miss a thing.
How you’ll be taught
Through a variety of teaching methods – from lectures and seminars to case study analysis, business simulations and projects – we encourage active, experiential and reflective learning. You will demonstrate independent learning, critical evaluation, reflection, discussion and debate, as well as the opportunity through the project to research, in significant depth, a relevant business issue.
The emphasis in the classroom is on problem-based learning, blending theory and practice, problem diagnosis and the selection of managerial tools to provide the best fit with the situation. Gaining real-life experience of actual business problems is key. In the past, students have created and marketed their own confectionary products, worked with companies on the redesign and repositioning of products such as organic fruit juices and protein supplements, and worked with companies on specific marketing and branding problems.
You will develop practical knowledge, expertise and valuable insights from visiting professionals from a wide range of industries. For example, students recently heard about sustainability and the challenges of ‘green’ marketing from the founder and owner of Alara Wholefoods, one of the world’s most sustainable suppliers of breakfast cereals, the first cereal company to be certified organic and the first to be licensed by Coeliac UK.

Changes to division of study time may be made in response to feedback and in accordance with our terms and conditions. Learning typically falls into three broad categories:
- Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
- Placement: placement hours normally include placement opportunities, but may also include live projects or virtual activity involving employers
- Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision
How you’ll be assessed
Using a wide range of techniques, you can expect to be assessed on the learning outcomes of your course in core modules through coursework in the form of essays, reports, presentations, case studies as well as time-constrained in-class tests and exams. We try to make assessments as practical and relevant as possible, incorporating the type of work required by future employers.
