Course summary

Smart computer systems engineering is a growing market in today’s computer industry. Embedded systems have become widespread in industry and can be found in almost all modern consumer devices, from washing machines to cars.

The Smart Computer Systems BEng Honours aims to develop your skills as a strong computer-based engineer, in demand in both industry and research. It will equip you with in-depth knowledge of the structure, design and efficient operation of smart computer system engineering, through a variety of embedded platforms, peripheral devices, associated operational, supervisory and networking software. 

The course is especially focused on the rapidly growing and changing technologies involving embedded systems, sensors, wireless networks and Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystems, and will help you meet the demand from employers for graduates with hardware and software engineering skills and know-how.

The course offers a short-term work-based learning experience that will give you the opportunity to work on a real-life problem, which is normally set by an external organisation as a small-scale project. This experience will allow you to put theory into practice by applying your knowledge and skills gained from various modules to address a real-life situation, usually within the context of a business-related problem.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to take a year in industry (work placement) after completing the second year of your study. This will help you gain work experience and increase your chances of employability after you graduate. You will be offered help and support to find and secure placement opportunities through various workshops and events organised by the Careers and Employability Service and the course team. Typically, you will be assigned into roles involving tasks related to software and/or hardware computer engineering.

Course accreditation

The course is intended to fulfil the educational requirements of the British Computer Society (BCS) to fulfil the educational requirements registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP) and partial Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Please note that accreditation from BCS is being sought but is currently pending.

Entry Requirements

  • A Levels – BCC to ABB
  • International Baccalaureate – 27 points including 5 in a Higher Level technical subject. We also welcome applications from students taking the IB Career related Programme
  • BTEC Extended Diploma – DMM to DDM
  • BTEC Diploma – D*D to D*D*
  • Access – 104 to 128  UCAS Tariff points from the Access course

In addition to one of the above, you should have:

  • GCSE English Language grade 4/C – IB grade 4 Higher Level, GCSE Maths grade 4/C – IB grade 4

If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component.

This program will develop students as engineers that will have skills to work in the areas of embedded systems, electronic engineering, and software engineering and so work for companies like BBC and BSkyB as well as electronics and technology giants such as BT, Nokia, British Aerospace, Philips and Mitsubishi, and to smaller private companies. Students also go on to work in the financial district in the City of London while others have started up their own businesses in manufacturing or consultancy. Opportunities also exist for postgraduate study leading to PhD qualifications.

The programme aims to create graduates who are well prepared for entry into a career in not only the engineering industries but also in any field requiring engineering skills. With an industry-wide shortage, high quality engineering graduates are enjoying a choice of job opportunities with good salaries.

The course provides an exciting, enjoyable and rewarding learning experience which will serve as a solid foundation for a professional engineering career leading eventually to registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
