Entry requirements

All applications are assessed on an individual basis and in some cases the University may require you to meet higher entry requirements than the minimums outlined below.

MPhil/PhD applicants should normally have:

  • A minimum classification of 2.1 in their first degree or equivalent
  • And preferably a Masters degree (or Masters degree pending)
  • Applicants whose secondary level education has not been conducted in the medium of English should also demonstrate evidence of appropriate English language proficiency, normally defined as:

IELTS 6.5 (overall band score with not less than 6.0 in any of the individual elements)
TOEFL (Internet Based) No longer accepted. Certificates issued before 17 April 2014 with scores of 91 may be accepted, please check with your admissions office.
TOEFL (Paper Based) No longer accepted. Certificates issued before 17 April 2014 with scores of 570 may be accepted, please check with your admissions office.
Cambridge Proficiency Pass

Please note:

Applicants to the Westminster Law School are expected to have passed their LLM or MA with merit or distinction with 65% or above in their dissertation and to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 where appropriate.

Applicants to Westminster Exchange are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 where appropriate.

Applicants to English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 (with not less than 6.5 in any of the individual elements).
