Entry requirements for study

If you are studying your first degree and wish to study for one semester or full year, the entrance requirements are:

  • You must have successfully completed 1 year of a degree programme at a recognised university or college
  • You must be 18 years of age or older when you begin the programme
  • If you are student from a country using the US GPA system, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. If you wish to study study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design, you need a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • If you are from a country with a different grading system, you must have an average of a C grade, or good, or equivalent. If you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design, you must be have an average of a B grade, or very good, or equivalent
  • You must be in good academic standing

Undergraduate English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide official proof of your English language ability. Proof of English must be in the form of a recent IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge English Language Examination score.

The University of Westminster, in addition, requires that you have an overall score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent if you are an undergraduate study abroad student, except for Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design, where you will require a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Exceptions for Tier 4 English language evidence and Programme Entry for undergraduate Study Abroad students

You do not need to prove your knowledge of English for Tier 4 or for entry to our programme if you are a non-native speaker of English and one of the following applies to you:

  • You are applying to come to the UK for a study abroad programme as part of a university degree course in the USA. The Home Office does not require you to provide proof of your English language ability but the University of Westminster does require you to submit an academic reference if you have studied in the US at degree level for less than 2 year
  • You have studied in the UK before as a Tier 4 (Child) student

 

  • You must be a graduate and hold an undergraduate degree.
  • If you are student from a country using the US GPA system you must have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. If you wish to study study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design you must have graduated with a cumulative 3.0 grade on a 4.0 scale.
  • If you are from a country with a different grading system, you must have graduate with a C grade or good or equivalent. If you wish to study study subjects relating to Media, Arts & Design you must be have graduated with a B grade or very good or equivalent.
  • You must be currently enrolled in a Master’s programme in your home country and intend to return to resume your studies after your participation in the study abroad programme.

Postgraduate Semester Study English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide official proof of your English language ability. Proof of English must be in the form of a recent IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge English Language Examination score.

To study graduate modules, you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, except you wish to study subjects relating to Media, Arts and Design where you will require a minimum score of IELTS 7.0.

Tier 4 Visa requirements and English language qualifications

To undertake the internship programme if you are not a European Economic Area or Swiss national (EEA comprises the countries of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) you will require a Tier 4 visa.

The Home Office requires that you achieve a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent in each of the four language components (listening, writing, speaking, and reading).

The University of Westminster in addition requires you to have a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, except for modules from the subject areas of Media, Arts and Design where you will require a minimum score of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent.

Exceptions apply for certain nationals in providing evidence of English language for Tier 4 purposes.

Exceptions for Tier 4 and Programme Entry English Language Evidence

You do not need to prove your knowledge of English for Tier 4 or for entry to our programme if you are a non-native speaker of English if you have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • the Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia
  • St Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • UK
  • USA

We can accept applicants:

  • Who will have graduated from high school at the time they join the programme and will be 18 years of age when they attend the summer school
  • Current university students
  • University graduates

To apply for the summer school you must provide evidence of your academic standing:

  • If you have completed high school or equivalent we require your High School Diploma or IB or your A Level results if you are a UK student
  • If you are about to graduate from high school we require your High School Transcript or IB
  • If you are a current university student we require your current university transcript
  • If you are not a current student we require your last academic record

Please note: evidence must be either the original or an official certified copy.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you need to provide official proof of your English language ability:

  • If you have an IELTS level of 6.0, TOEFL 80 or equivalent you can study any summer school module
  • We are happy to consider a variety of English language tests

Academic requirements

USA

If you are from a US institution of higher education (eg a university or college) the minimum requirement is a cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

EU

If you are from an EU institution you must be able to provide proof of good academic standing. Achieved marks can range from a minimum of satisfactory, good, very good or above, depending on the country of schooling.

Outside the EU or USA

All International qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate will be considered.

UK

If you are from the UK you must have a minimum of two passes at GCE A Level. If you would like to discuss your current grades, please email us at [email protected].

To be eligible to apply for this programme, you must:

  • be 18 years of age or older when you begin the programme
  • have successfully completed 1 year at a recognised university
  • be currently enrolled in a degree programme in your home country and intend to return to resume your studies after your participation in the study abroad programme

Additional entry requirements for:

Students from China

Students from China must have achieved one of the following:

  • 211, 985 and top national universities: 70%+ or GPA 2.0/4
  • National Universities: 75%+ or GPA 2.5/4
  • High-ranking Private Universities: 80% or GPA 3.0/4

Students from Japan

Students from Japan must have 50% of grades at 'A' or 'B', where the grading scale for A and B is 70%–100%.

Students from South Korea

Students from South Korea must have either a GPA of 2.8/4.0 or 50% of grades at 'A' or 'B'.

EFL+ Study Abroad Programme English language requirements

To be able to apply for this programme, you must have an IELTS score of 4.5 for each of the four language components (reading, listening, speaking, writing).

English language entry requirements for visa purposes

If you need to take an English language test for your visa application, please be aware that from April 5 2015, only IELTS taken in test centres approved by the Home Office are acceptable for use in a UK visa application for the University of Westminster. The University cannot make its own assessment of your English language ability for this programme.

Approved test centres may offer both secure IELTS tests (SELT tests) and non-secure tests (non-SELT tests). You must make sure you book onto a secure (SELT) test. The IELTS online booking form refers to these secure tests as 'IELTS for UKVI'.

We recommend you book your test well in advance of your course start date, as places on the tests may book up quickly.

Study Abroad programmes visa requirements

Semester Study (no internship)

If you choose to study abroad with us for a semester and do not take an internship, you can apply for a Short Term Study Visa. For most students, you can do this on arrival at the airport. Academic Year Study

If you choose to study abroad with us for an academic year, then you are required to obtain a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa. For full details, including how to apply for this visa, please visit our Tier 4 (General) Student Visa page.

If you are a national of an EEA country (European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or you are from Switzerland, you can enter the UK as a student with a minimum of formality: you do not require entry clearance or a visa.

If you are a national of a non-EEA country, you will require a Short-Term Study Visa.

In order to join the EFL+ Study Abroad Programme you are required to obtain a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa.
