Course summary

Worldwide spending on the technologies and services that enable digital transformation is forecast to reach £1.8 trillion in 2023 – companies everywhere have realised they need technology to stay relevant, improve productivity and increase profitability. Innovative and practical, our degree has been designed with input from industry to respond to growing employer demands for advanced digital skills.

Modern organisations increasingly rely on digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, blockchain, cryptocurrencies and data analytics, to improve their business processes and provide increased value to customers. However, integrating these new technologies into existing operations can prove complex and costly – it requires a unique skillset that combines business acumen and digital competence.

Open to graduates from any subject area, this course is ideal for aspiring digital business professionals who want to enhance their skills and career prospects by becoming business oriented, but with sufficient understanding of the latest technology to envisage, plan and manage digital initiatives successfully. It will prepare you to manage digital business challenges and lead at the forefront of digital transformation.

The course draws on the University’s established expertise in the area of digital business, which includes our dedicated Centre for Digital Business Research, which conducts cutting-edge research into the theory, methods and technologies underpinning the digital transformation of modern 21st century enterprises.

Our focus is very much on experiential learning. You’ll be taught by staff with direct experience of developing a variety of digital solutions for business and commerce. Industry experts will present real-world case studies and scenarios, focusing on various aspects of digital business, such as emergent technologies, encryption theory and digital transformation. You’ll also work in groups on live projects aimed at designing digital solutions, for example, developing enterprise architectures, business process maps or prototype software applications in collaboration with industrial partners.

Top reasons to study with us

  • Exciting teaching and learning approaches with real-life case studies, live projects, workshops and analytical tools
  • Become business-ready through practical experience, including developing solutions based on real-life scenarios and/or working with industrial partners, for example, students have previously worked with Chubb, one of the world’s largest publicly traded property and casualty insurance companies
  • Hear direct from guest speakers from industry, with past talks covering current topics in disruptive innovation, encryption and digital transformation
  • Potential to pursue further qualifications and professional certification through professional bodies such as the British Computer Society (BCS), SAS Global Certification Programme and Mendix University

Course structure

On this course, you'll develop the skills, knowledge, tools and techniques required for digital transformation. A broad curriculum covers everything from digital innovation and disruption to digital trust and digital marketing. To be awarded the MSc in Digital Business, you’ll need to take seven core modules and one option.

The modules below are indicative of what you will study on this course.

Semester 1

The first semester is designed to develop core digital capabilities, such as the theoretical foundations of digital business and transformation, analytical capabilities and business intelligence, and the aspects of digital trust, and deepen your understanding of the theory and practices required for the application of technology to business. We will begin to build your expertise on the planning, development and implementation of digital solutions for business.

Semester 2

During the second semester we will continue to bridge any gaps between technical proficiency and digital business skills. We'll develop knowledge targeting the integration of digital techniques within the practice of marketing, skills to address organisational innovation challenges and the development of digital transformation strategies, initiatives and operational models.

The final project takes the form of a professional consultancy project in digital transformation. You may choose to carry out research or work with your own industrial partner to address a substantial digital transformation scenario, which will put your learning into practice and help you appreciate aspects of organisational dynamics.

Core modules

The big data analytics and business intelligence module provides opportunities to understand the foundations of big data, data analytics life cycle and business intelligence. Several BI platforms will be introduced, and data analytics technologies will be reviewed. Finally, the statistical skills and knowledge which can be applied to practical big data analytics cases in an organisational context will be developed.

The module explores the design, architectural and technological aspects of digital business systems and the concerns arising from their continuous transformation. The main themes of the module are: theoretical foundations of digital business and transformation, architecting the digital enterprise and State-of-the-Art technologies for the digital business.

The module explores digital trust through three aspects closely related to digital business: cybersecurity, risk management and blockchain technologies. It studies the principles and approaches of information security, examines the frameworks and techniques employed to effectively manage risk, and investigates the fundamentals, applications and impact of blockchain applications.

The module builds digital business consultancy skills through the exploration of authentic industry scenarios. You'll learn how to develop digital solutions to given business challenges by means of extending an organisation’s digital capabilities to address issues, improve operational efficiency and drive innovation, whilst developing a robust strategy to guide and inform digital transformation changes.

This module provides you with an understanding of the context of digital innovation, disruption and transformation underpinned by an appreciation of technological and organisational approaches to the digital business environment. Through the analysis of theoretical frameworks and case examples, you will have an opportunity to discuss the fundamental nature of digital business and explore real-world cases of how digital technologies and information systems have enabled organisational transformation through the experience of digital innovation and disruption.

This module will enable you to contribute to the development of digital transformation strategies, initiatives, operational models, and to support their implementation, as organisations transform themselves into digital native enterprises. Whilst considering the associated impacts and implications for the organisation and stakeholders, addressing the hype and reality, including the ethical and social and where they link into the management of risk and change.

The module aims to build up practice-based skills by enabling you to produce a professional digital business report based on an individually conducted research project. You will be supported by a series of research methods classes and by the appointment of an individual supervisor, who will provide advice and guidance throughout the conduct of the project. You are strongly encouraged to undertake an applied project that delivers a digital business solution or improvement for a host organisation. Alternatively, the project could involve research based on the collection of primary data from a number of sources. If neither of these approaches are possible, then you could conduct a desk-based piece of research, based on secondary data. This might develop a new theoretical treatise or re-interpret an existing dataset. In all cases, the project report should include recommendations for the improvement of business practice and performance using digital technology.

Optional modules

The module is designed to introduce you to working knowledge of agile project management methodologies, tools and techniques. The aim of the module is to develop understanding of agile methods and practical skills in applying agile tools and techniques in projects using AgilePM. The module critically appraises various agile methodologies for project management such as Scrum and Kanban. The module enables you to practice aspects of applying agile principles and methods needed to manage agile projects in IT, digital services and other knowledge-based industries.

The expansion and ready availability of computing devices has changed the way consumers interact with each other and the commercial world. This module explores the integration of digital techniques within the practice of marketing. There are four core themes – the gathering of information about customers and competitors and interpreting their behaviour; the development of strategies for acquisition, conversion and retention; the use of digital tools within the communication process and evaluation through digital analytics.

Teaching and assessment

Your learning experience is designed to develop the capabilities needed by the graduate labour market, integrating practice-based learning and projects alongside academic learning and marketing theory.

To assist the learning experience, we provide reading lists, lecture and seminar materials in advance via Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. Where possible, lectures are recorded using specialist software and similar tools to make sure you can really listen to what is said in class and don’t miss a thing.

How you’ll be taught

Through a variety of teaching methods – from lectures and seminars to live case study analysis and business projects – we aim to bring study to life by incorporating real-world experience.

There is a requirement for ‘self-guided’ learning and you will be expected to develop your own opinions and approaches to problems. Group work is a core component of the programme, which allows you to deepen relationships with classmates, get a more thorough understanding of subjects by interacting with people from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, and mimic the office environment in which projects are often conducted in small teams across different departments.

For the Big Data Analytics module, for instance, you are introduced to and learn to use SAS (University Edition) as a platform for statistical analysis and data analytics and, through special workshops, will improve your practical skills. For the Cybersecurity module, you work on encryption principles with the help of practical sessions that cover basic and advanced encryption methods and practices, while in Contemporary Issues, you learn agile development and work in teams competing for the best solution and honing your consultancy skills.

We also hope to invite current practitioners to share current challenges and experiences – past talks have covered current topics in disruptive innovation, prototyping and business solutions, cybersecurity, encryption and digital transformation.

In the following graph you'll find examples of how study time has been distributed in the past (data from the academic year 2022/23). Changes to division of study time may be made in response to feedback and in accordance with our terms and conditions. Learning typically falls into three broad categories:

  • Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
  • Placement: placement hours normally include placement opportunities, but may also include live projects or virtual activity involving employers
  • Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision

How you’ll be assessed

We use a wide range of engaging assessment methods, including simulations, business challenges, investigating briefs, group pitches and video presentations. The course involves a variety of assessment methods that call on the student to propose solutions to real case studies both in groups, alone and under short time limits.

Presentations and essays are also included in the course content, but it is the focus on practical resolution to real problems and the encouragement of analytical skills and creativity that make this an attractive course. For example, we encourage a reflective learning journey report following the consultancy or work project undertaken in the placement organisation.

In the following graph you'll find an indication of what you can expect (data from the academic year 2022/23). Changes to assessment weights may be made in response to feedback and in accordance with our terms and conditions. Assessments typically fall into three broad categories:

  • Practical: examples include presentations, podcasts, blogs
  • Written exams: end of semester exams
  • Coursework: examples include essays, in-class tests, portfolios, dissertation
