Postponement of Graduation Ceremonies July 2021
The recently issued results letters correctly confirm that July 2021 graduation has been postponed. Unfortunately, the letters also mentioned that this year’s ceremonies would be taking place at the Royal Festival Hall. This information should have been removed from the letter and we apologise for any confusion caused. The position on graduation remains unchanged and is set out below.
The University has taken the difficult decision to postpone the July graduation ceremonies this year.
We've been working through the Government’s Covid-19 roadmap for large scale events and after considering all the guidance and consulting with the Royal Festival Hall, we've come to the difficult decision to postpone the July ceremonies. We hope to reschedule these in the summer of 2022 for students who were unable to graduate this year and last year.
While the Government’s roadmap is hopeful for a return to large-scale events in June, there is no guarantee that this will be possible. If the ceremonies were permitted to take place, it is highly likely that social distancing would be in place and that there would be restrictions on the type of event we could offer and the number of guests that could be invited. We want to make sure that you have the best graduation day possible and believe that postponing the ceremonies is the right thing to do.
We know this news will be disappointing and that the last year has been a difficult period for you all. We understand how important graduation is to you and your family and want nothing more than to celebrate with you at an in-person ceremony. However, these events involve thousands of people traveling to London from all over the UK and the world, so we needed to take this decision early rather than wait to see how the situation progresses. A late cancellation of the ceremonies would have significant impact on those who had booked travel and accommodation.
We are delighted to confirm that, in addition to the rescheduled graduation ceremonies planned for 2022, we will also be running Virtual Celebrations launching on Monday 9 August to mark the achievements of our Class of 2021.
We appreciate that a Virtual Celebration cannot replace the graduation ceremony that you and your families were looking forward to, but we hope that they will provide a memorable opportunity for you to celebrate and reflect on your life at University.
We also remain committed to delivering graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021, government guidelines allowing. Further details of our live graduation events will follow as soon as they are available and will be published on our website.
