Students and staff can borrow a MacBook using our 24/7 Self-Service Loan System.

The system allows you to borrow a MacBook for 24 hours using your University card and a PIN code.

If you use the service, you must ensure the MacBook is returned within 24 hours to the same Self Service unit that you borrowed it from. If you borrow on a Friday you can return on Monday. The system will print a receipt if you require it.

Where do I go to borrow a Macbook?

  • Harrow Library (A Block reception by the SU shop)
  • Cavendish Campus (on the Ground Floor - outside the Students' Union office)
  • Marylebone Campus (outside the Library)
  • Regent Campus (in Computer Lab B15)

Creating your pin code

The first thing you need to do to use the loan system is set up a PIN code (this only needs to be done once).  For guidance on how to do this, download the short guide or watch the video on this page.

How to return a Macbook

  • Shut down the MacBook from the Apple menu before returning it to the Self-Service unit otherwise your work will remain in the MacBook.
  • You must return the MacBook to the Self Service unit you borrowed from.
  • On the Self-Service screen click on the “Return” button on the screen.
  • Touch your ID card on the card reader below the screen on the centre unit.
  • Please enter your 4-digit PIN code.
  • The screen will highlight a locker name to use and the locker will be surrounded by flashing white light.  Put the MacBook inside the locker with the power input facing you and attach the power cable. Attaching the cable to the MacBook removes the loan from your library account. Close the locker door.
  • Important: Please ensure that you attach the power cable. If you do not the MacBook loan is still against your name.
  • The laptop will charge up and will then be available for borrowing.

Printing a return receipt for your loan

  • Click on the 'Print Return Receipt' button on the screen.
  • Touch your ID card on the card reader below the screen on the centre unit.
  • Please enter your 4-digit PIN code.
  • A message will display on screen explaining receipt being printed and the paper receipt will print. This receipt will show your last successful return of MacBook.

Using the MacBook

  • Save work to a USB. If work is saved on the hard drive it will be deleted on Shutdown/Log off.
  • We do not lend chargers. The MacBook will be at least 80% charged and the battery life is 4 – 6 hours.
  • MacBooks have Microsoft Office, Adobe CC and Xcode software installed. You will not be able to install any other software.

Renewing

  • You cannot renew a MacBook however you can borrow another as soon as you have returned the current one. Locker lights will be blue if the MacBooks are available for borrowing and red or no light if they are not.
