Degree classifications explained
In the UK, the final mark you achieve for your degree is called a degree classification.
This is equivalent to a GPA (Grade Point Average) in the United States, ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits in Europe or a grade in other countries.
At Westminster, we average the marks from your best modules at the relevant level/s of study to calculate the final percentage.
Here's what the final percentage means, in terms of your degree classification:
Percentage | Undergraduate | Postgraduate |
|---|---|---|
70% or higher | First Class Honours (1st) | Distinction |
60%–69% | Upper Second Class (2:1) | Merit |
50%–59% | Lower Second Class (2:2) | Pass |
40%–49% | Third | Fail |
30% or lower | Fail | Fail |
