Award documents: 1993 or earlier

If you were awarded in 1993 or earlier, we may be able to locate your award documents in our archives. Find out how it works.

While we can’t guarantee we have the information you're seeking, the first step is to contact us via the Student Centre live chat.

Documents you can request

As documents from 1993 or before require extra resource to retrieve from the archive of historical records, they are charged at a higher rate than those earned more recently. All charges are subject to review.

Archive certificate: £45

If you completed your degree from June 1992 to 1993, you may be able to request a replacement award certificate by contacting us.

If you completed your degree before June 1992 at our predecessor institution, the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL), you may be able to order a Certificate of Equivalence from us. Please note this document is not an award certificate.

PCL certificates were issued by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). You can find information on how to verify your study via the Open University’s aftercare service.

Archive transcript (if available): £50

Individual transcript records from 1993 or earlier are not held digitally and may not exist, so we can’t normally provide transcripts or module breakdowns.

If you make a transcript request from 1993 or earlier, we’ll search our off-site archived exam board files, which typically takes 6–8 weeks.

Archive award letter: £15

This is an official letter confirming your course of study and award details. It may also include your mode of study (full time or part time), length of your course and exact completion date.

All information provided in the letter will depend entirely on what we can verify from the archive.

Processing and delivery

Searching the archives

It may take several weeks to process your request because searching digital or physical archives takes longer.

Transcript requests take significantly longer as archived exam board files are stored off-site. Recalling and searching these boxes typically takes 6–8 weeks, but it may take longer.

Paying for your documents

Once we've located the relevant records, we’ll direct you to the relevant platform to pay.

Delivery

Delivery to the UK takes up to two weeks. Overseas delivery takes 2–4 weeks. It may take longer to process your order at busy times such as graduation or enrolment.

Other historical documents you can request

The history and timeline of our institution are available on our Heritage page.
