School of Applied Management
Our School brings together a community of around 50 academic staff and 20 visiting industry practitioners, trainers and consultants, delivering teaching, applied research and executive training. Our mission is to transform the prospects and lives of our students through equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to excel in professional careers in highly specialised areas of management. The School draws on expertise from five subject areas: information management, operations management, digital business, project management, property management, development and investment and construction. These subjects share a common concern to improve the performance of enterprises and infrastructure through the application of advanced techniques and technologies, particularly digital technologies. We also equip our graduates with the ability to create value by reducing risk, managing cost and delivering returns on investment and to ensure projects and assets are delivered safely and sustainably.
We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and also executive training. At Masters level we offer specialisms in Project Management, Major Projects and Programme Management, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, Digital Business, Property Finance, Building Information Management, Construction Commercial Management, Construction Project Management and Real Estate Development. We also offer programmes at undergraduate level, including Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management BSc (Hons), Real Estate, Property and Planning, Building Surveying and Construction Management, and we are currently developing a new degree in Business Management with Digital Business. In the Complete University Guide (2019), Westminster’s Land & Property Management courses are ranked 9th in the UK and 2nd in London.
Consistent with the University’s focus on applied and professional education, we enjoy very close relationships with the professions, employers, government and public bodies. We have Approved Training Organisation (ATO) status, granted by the Association of Project Management Group (APMG), for project management courses including PRINCE2, Agile Project Management and the Management of Risk. Our MSc in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. In the area of property and construction, all of our courses are accredited by the Royal Institution for Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) or both. Our work with industry also extends to the development of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, where our faculty contribute their expertise and supervision to train new talent.
Our School is active in applied research. In information management, we focus on the application of information and communication technology in organisational settings, particularly the emerging forms of digital technologies now used in social media, e-business and knowledge management. Our operations management expertise includes specialisms in sustainable supply chain management, purchasing, logistics, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP systems) and service operations design. We also specialise in project management, including the management of project risk, the management of complex programmes and international projects. In property and construction management, we generate new thinking in real estate appraisal, construction economics, risk management, energy use in buildings and design technology for low carbon building.
