Funding your experience
The level of funding which is available to you is determined by the type and length of the opportunity that you are taking part in.
As a Westminster student, you are all eligible to apply for the Distant Horizons award, however there are other funding opportunities available to you as well.
For information about the Erasmus+ Grant please see our dedicated page about Erasmus+ and Grants.
If you are going on an exchange that is not funded through Erasmus+, then you can apply for a £500 scholarship from the British Universities and Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX). Find out how to apply on the BUTEX website.
Distant Horizons awards
The University of Westminster offers a number of Distant Horizons awards for undergraduate students to promote academic development through international experiences. You will need to meet certain criteria to be eligible.
There is one round of applications per year, usually ending in June, so we suggest applying even if your time abroad has not yet been confirmed. There are limitations on when the travel must take place. See the Distant Horizons page for more details.
Erasmus+ students can also apply, however, they must show that their Erasmus+ grant does not cover the type of academic event they are applying for.
Student Finance England travel grant
You may be eligible for a travel grant to cover the cost of any necessary travel and expenses related to you studying or working abroad as part of your degree.
You will have to fund the first £303 of travel yourself, but above that Student Finance England will cover the rest of the cost. The grant also covers other costs like as visas, vaccinations and medical insurance.
You can apply for your travel grant from Student Finance England, which will then send you a travel grant application form.
If you are from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, there is a different process. Check the relevant Student Finance web pages for Wales or Northern Ireland, or download the brochure for Scotland (page 21).
