The School of Life Sciences demonstrates its commitment to scientific engagement through the work of its Professor of Science Communication, Lewis Dartnell, an internationally recognised researcher, author and science communicator. Through extensive public engagement, media outreach and educational activities, he plays a leading role in making scientific research accessible to diverse audiences and inspiring future generations of scientists.
Professor Dartnell regularly delivers talks and interactive sessions for learners from primary school through to A-level, as well as speaking at major public events such as New Scientist Live and the Science in Action lecture series, reaching audiences of up to 900 students. His work encourages curiosity, critical thinking and engagement with STEM subjects.
Beyond education, he contributes to documentaries, television programmes and exhibitions, including projects with the Natural History Museum, and is a regular contributor to national newspapers, television, radio and podcasts. Through these channels, he helps communicate scientific advances and highlight the societal value of research.
Professor Dartnell also supports a wide range of public engagement and science communication activities across the WISER team, sharing his expertise and experience and helping researchers connect with schools, communities and wider audiences. His contributions strengthen the WISER team's culture of engagement and knowledge exchange, ensuring that research has impact beyond academia.
As a science writer, he further extends the reach of Westminster's research through a monthly column in BBC Sky at Night Magazine and five acclaimed popular science books, three of which were recognised as Sunday Times or Waterstones Books of the Year.
