Westminster students gain confidence for future careers on QHT-funded trip to Lisbon

Westminster Marketing Management BA Honours students recently visited Lisbon, Portugal, on a Quintin Hogg Trust (QHT)-funded field trip. Led by course leader Ali Baig, the students explored cultural institutions and visited some of the city’s fastest growing startups to expand their global horizons.

The six-day visit, which took place between 28 April and 3 May, provided opportunities for students to immerse themselves in a different culture through guided tours of the Lisbon Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology and iconic heritage sites such as the Monastery of Jerónimos. Students also visited Portugal's largest science and technology park, Taguspark, where they met with some of Lisbon’s fastest growing start-ups to gain real-life insight into business management, before attending a guest lecture in Marketing at the NOVA School of Business and Economics, ranked as the number one business school in Portugal.

The group of mostly third-year students were accompanied by their course leader Ali Baig, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, and the Assistant Head of the School of Management and Marketing, Dr Donna Mai.

The trip developed the students’ global outlook and cultural sensitivity, broadening their horizons after graduation and enhancing their job prospects. Several students stated that they now feel more confident applying for jobs or Master’s programmes overseas due to the sense of independence fostered throughout the visit.

The trip also coincided with the first day of the Iberian Peninsula power cut, which tested the students’ resourcefulness, adaptability and made them aware of the impact of ever-increasing global unpredictability.

About the trip one student said: “We have been so grateful for this incredible opportunity. It was an amazing way to end our time at Westminster and will be one our best memories of studying there.”

Ali Baig added: “‘I would really like to thank the QHT and Distant Horizons for providing the funding for this trip. It provided an outstanding opportunity for the students to develop their sense of cultural curiosity and international mobility.  The students will build upon this incredible experience, graduating the University with a renewed sense of confidence and global empowerment.”
