Eligibility to attend a ceremony

The following needs to apply in order for you to be eligible to attend your ceremony.

  • You must have a conferred award. Your award must be agreed at least two weeks prior to your ceremony in order for you to attend.
  • You must have paid all tuition fees owing to the University. You will not receive any information for your ceremony while you have any tuition fees owing to the University. This does not include any non-tuition fee debts.

Please make sure that you clear any outstanding academic debts at least a week before your results are due to be released. Information on paying your fees can be found on our Paying your fees page.

You must have booked your tickets by the date specified in your invitation

If you do not receive your invitation email and you believe you are eligible to attend a ceremony please email [email protected] as soon as possible.

You will be asked to complete the following

  • Check and/or update the delivery address for your certificate
  • Graduation attendance

To complete the task, you will need to:

  • Log in to My Student Record using your username and password (you may be asked to enter your details twice during the process)
  • Click on the My Degree Certificate and Graduation at the top of the page. Select Certificate Details and Graduation Booking

You won't be able to book until you receive the invitation email.

Graduand and guest tickets are not sent out - you will need to collect your tickets from the venue on the day of the ceremony.

Guest tickets

Graduand tickets are free but you must confirm your attendance by completing the Booking Task in the student portal.

Guest tickets are purchased through the Booking Task and cost £25 per person. You must reserve your tickets before the booking deadline. You will not be asked to pay for tickets you have reserved until booking has closed and your results have been published.

There may be a limited number of guest tickets to purchase at the venue available on the day, but this is not guaranteed, being subject to availability. We strongly recommend that you order all your guest tickets by completing the online booking process. If guest tickets are available, they can be purchased for cash only and will cost £30.

For ceremonies at St Marylebone Parish Church we can only guarantee two guest tickets in the first instance.

For ceremonies at the Royal Festival Hall you may purchase a maximum of four guest tickets.

Should you wish to change the number of guest tickets you require you will be able to return to the booking task up until the booking deadline to make your changes.

Private seating areas (boxes)

The Royal Festival Hall has a number of private seating areas (boxes) available for up to four guests at a cost of £130 per box.

If you have four guests you will be given the option to reserve a box during the booking process.

Gown hire

You and your fellow graduands will all be required to wear graduation gowns to the ceremonies and we recommend that you order your gown at least three weeks before your ceremony.

Gowns should be ordered from Ede & Ravenscroft and, once ordered, will be available for collection from the ceremony venue.

Visit the Ede & Ravenscroft website.

For more information about collecting your gown, see our Your graduation ceremony page.

There is no dress code for your guests, but as the ceremony is a formal occasion, we would recommend all guests wear smart dress.

Gown hire costs

The cost of hiring your gown will depend on your level of award, the costs listed below are for guidance only and may vary.

  • Undergraduate - £45.00
  • Postgraduate - £51.00
  • Research - £65.00

You should be aware that if you fail to order your gown by the closing deadline you will need to arrange hire at the venue on the day of your ceremony.  This will cost significantly more and Ede and Ravenscroft cannot guarantee that they will have the correct size and gown for you.

Data Protection

All graduates attending the ceremony should be aware of the following:

  • Your name (as registered with the University) will be printed in the University's graduation ceremony programme. This is distributed to all those attending the ceremony. Please note that your degree classification will not be printed in this programme or announced at the ceremony.
  • Your name will be printed on the University's 'Class of 20XX' T-shirt.

When you complete your booking you will be given the opportunity to inform us if you do not wish for your name to be included.

We understand that your ceremony is a family celebration and children are welcome to attend. However, the ceremonies are formal occasions and therefore may not be appropriate for young children.

If you do wish to bring children you will need to purchase a guest ticket for children over two years and they will need to be seated with a guest, we are unable to seat children with graduates. Please note that there are no concessions. Childcare facilities are not available at the venue.

The ceremony is shown on screens in the foyers of the Royal Festival Hall so you can opt to have children attend the day with you but not be seated in the auditorium.
