Explore teaching
Participants gain valuable work experience in a school classroom. You spend 15 days (approx. 100 hours) as a volunteer teaching assistant in a school or college, supporting in your specialist subject area or age group.
You will contribute to raising the attainment of school pupils by working with small groups under the direction of the teacher. While the scheme provides an opportunity to test the waters of a possible teaching career, it’s also a chance to be a role model for young people and raise their aspirations towards higher education.
The scheme builds your transferable skills such as teamwork, oral communication, initiative, motivation, flexibility and adaptability – useful skills to highlight on your CV, once you complete your studies.
You will be required to attend a preparatory course over 3 half-days, which includes an introduction to lesson planning, working in schools and the teacher’s professional role. We will also help you obtain an enhanced DBS check.

Society and Club Committee Member – Students' Union activity
Society and club committees lead and manage Students' Union clubs and societies. Being a member is a year-long position.
Committees will be expected to promote their society/club throughout the year through various communication channels including social media and print. Society and club committees will be responsible for supporting their president/captain, organising and delivering campaigns and events. These can be varied in nature and content. Committees are expected to run social and community events.
It is expected that over 50 hours per year will be invested in this voluntary role.

Smoke Magazine Committee Volunteer – Students' Union activity
Smoke magazine committee members lead and manage the content production and delivery of Smoke Magazine. This is a year-long position and the committee will recruit students to contribute to the magazine through articles, photography or design skills.
The Committee will be expected to promote the magazine throughout the year through various communication channels including social media and ensuring effective distribution of the magazine. The committee will be responsible for organising and delivering three magazines each year. These can be varied in nature and content.

Smoke Radio Committee Volunteer – Students’ Union activity
Smoke Radio's committee members lead and manage the content production and delivery of Smoke Radio. This is a year-long position and the committee will recruit students to contribute to the Radio Station through the organisation and broadcast of shows and publicise both Union and University news and events which are relevant to Westminster students.

Smoke TV Committee Volunteer – Students’ Union activity
Smoke TV committee members lead and manage the content production and delivery of Smoke TV.
This is a year-long position and the committee will recruit students to contribute to all elements of programme production from filming, to editing, scripting to casting. The Committee will be expected to promote the TV Station and the volunteering opportunities it holds throughout the year through various communication channels including social media and ensuring effective distribution of programmes.

QH Committee Newspaper Volunteer – Students’ Union activity
QH committee members lead and manage the content production and delivery of the QH Newspaper.
This is a year-long position and the committee will recruit students to contribute to the paper through articles, photography or design skills.
The committee will be expected to promote the paper throughout the year through various communication channels including social media and ensuring effective distribution of the publication. The committee will be responsible for organising and delivering eight newspapers each year. These can be varied in nature and content.
