The University of Westminster is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for refugees, people seeking asylum and those with lived experience of displacement.
As part of our work towards becoming a University of Sanctuary, we are developing institutional practices that promote access, support and belonging across our community.
What is a University of Sanctuary?
The University of Sanctuary is a UK-wide initiative that recognises universities which:
- Provide a safe and supportive environment
- Promote understanding of the experiences of displaced people
- Take proactive steps to remove barriers to education
The initiative is guided by three core principles:
- Learn – raising awareness and understanding
- Embed – building inclusive policies and practices
- Share – working in partnership and contributing to wider change
Support for students
We are working to strengthen support across a range of areas, including:
- Advice and guidance for students from refugee or asylum backgrounds
- Financial support and scholarship opportunities
- Wellbeing and pastoral support
- Specialist mentoring and academic support
Opportunities to get involved
We are developing opportunities for students and staff to engage with Sanctuary work, including:
- Establishing a Student Action for Refugees (STAR) group
- Volunteering and outreach initiatives
- Events, workshops, and awareness activities
