Established in 2023, the Centre for Social Justice Research (CSJR) sets out to understand contemporary social inequalities and challenge the power relations and institutions that sustain them in order to bring about meaningful social change.
Centre themes
The CSJR provides a focus for social justice research at Westminster, with members across the social sciences, arts, and humanities. Our core membership comprises researchers and PhD students working in Sociology and Criminology, but also includes colleagues in Politics, Law, Psychology, Art Practice, Education, and Languages who work on social justice issues.
Our strengths include:
- Criminal Justice, Criminalisation, Violence, and Convict Criminology
Often involving the participation of stigmatised and marginalised communities, our methodologically innovative criminological research foregrounds the experiences of vulnerable groups and individuals within the criminal justice systems of the UK, Europe, and the Global South.
- Gender and sexualities research
CSJR colleagues lead intersectional gender and sexualities research that uses collaborative practices and non-hierarchical methodologies to challenge dominant structures of power. They champion advocacy and radical transformation with an ethos of care and mutual support.
- Interdisciplinary approaches to social justice
Operating across disciplinary boundaries, CSJR members steer influential research on some of the most important issues of the day, from migration and border regimes to racism and racialization, from debates about young people and families to the study of social movements and contemporary urban life.
