Founded in 1906, Dongguk University is a prestigious Buddhist-affiliated institution located in the heart of Seoul. Recognised among South Korea’s top universities, Dongguk is renowned for its excellence in the arts, humanities and research innovation.

The delegation was hosted on 21 October by Professor Andrew Linn, Westminster’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, and Dr Karen Jackson, Reader in Economics and College Director of International Development at WBS. They were joined by Owain Evans, Student Mobility Manager, and Zuzana Bardino, International Partnerships Officer.

The student exchange agreement, signed by Professor Jaewoong Yun, President of Dongguk University, and Professor Linn in an official signing ceremony, will open up exciting opportunities for WBS students to study in Seoul – one of the world’s most dynamic and inspiring study destinations – for a semester, a full academic year or a summer programme. Students from Dongguk University will also be welcomed to London to study at WBS, based at Westminster’s centrally located Marylebone Campus.

The new agreement marks another milestone in the University of Westminster’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that enrich learning experiences for students and promote cross-cultural understanding, as part of its institutional commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. The exchange agreement also highlights the University’s Being Westminster strategic vision of being a place where everyone is welcome.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Linn said: “Dongguk University is a university very much like our own, offering a rich and diverse curriculum based on a strong ethos. We have much in common, and I’m sure that our students will feel at home in each other’s institutions. It is our hope that the partnership with WBS will provide a strong basis for ongoing and productive collaboration in the future.”

Dr Jackson added: "We are delighted to formalise our partnership with Dongguk University, a truly distinctive institution whose Buddhist heritage continues to shape its academic ethos and community spirit. Set beneath the iconic Seoul Tower, Dongguk offers an inspiring setting that combines deep cultural tradition with the energy of one of the world’s most innovative cities."

This collaboration directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
