Web browsing tools

What is safe browsing?

When you surf the internet, you’re exposed to potential IT security threats from replicated and fake websites.

Often these sites are well crafted and can appear genuine to the eye. They may even be ‘clones’ of the genuine sites, with genuine logos and text, but with fake links inserted or they may contain malware.

You can protect yourself against the risks of these sites by keeping your browser and any plug-ins you have installed up to date.

You can also add free tools to your browser that will warn you about potential threats. Other tools will warn you when you have strayed onto a fake website designed to steal your money or details.

The following tools will inform you of any untrustworthy sites and will help you to browse more safely.

Free Tools

  • McAfee SiteAdvisor - Available for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari web browsers. This software adds safety ratings to your browser and search engine results. There is a free and a paid-for version.
  • NetCraft Anti-Phishing tool bar for Windows XP - Protect your savings from phishing attacks and see the hosting location and risk rating of every site you visit.
  • Web Of Trust WOT - A safe surfing tool for your browser that protects you against scams, untrustworthy links and rogue web stores.
