English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies
The Department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (ELCS) is a large, multi-disciplinary department, based in the University’s historic Regent Street building. We have a strong reputation for the imaginative and creative inter-disciplinary work that we do, making the department an inspiring place in which to study or undertake research.
In the UK Government's REF 2014 assessment of research activity, English at Westminster was ranked 28th out of 89 departments in Britain, with 79% of its work judged to be of world leading or internationally excellent quality. In terms of research publications, English Literature and Language at Westminster was ranked in the top 20 UK departments, with around a third of the work judged to be world leading.
Staff are well-known and widely published in their fields and have an equally strong commitment to both research and teaching. We are also committed to collaborative work with staff and students inside Westminster and with colleagues and partners in Britain and around the globe. This brings richness and diversity to our teaching and to the life of our research community.
At undergraduate level we offer programmes in English Literature, English Language, Linguistics and Creative Writing and there are also taught postgraduate degrees in those subjects. In addition we offer the MA Visual Culture; MA Museums, Galleries and Contemporary Culture; MA Cultural and Critical Studies and the MA TESOL. Our research students are undertaking PhD study in a wide range of subjects, benefiting from the department’s intellectual diversity and global perspective.
