Important information on IELTS tests

To protect the health of IELTS test takers in light of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), IELTS tests have been suspended in the UK until further notice.

Affected test-takers will be eligible for a transfer or refund by contacting our centre via email.

Please comply with UK Government measures on Coronavirus.

Here you can find out how to take the IELTS exam at the University of Westminster. We are one of the largest IELTS testing facilities in the UK and our exam centre is based in central London, only a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is recognised as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.

Last year, more than 2 million people took the tests all over the world. IELTS is globally accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 9,000 organisations.

About the IELTS test

IELTS test takers can choose between two versions of the test – Academic (AC) or General Training (GT) – depending on their academic or professional aims, or their visa requirements. All candidates take the same listening and speaking components, but different reading and writing components.

The reading, listening and writing parts of the test can be taken on paper or computer. The speaking test is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.

Computer-delivered IELTS

We are now offering IELTS testing on computer to make it easier and more convenient for you to take your test. With computer-delivered IELTS:

  • there are more test dates available
  • you can choose IELTS at a time convenient for you
  • you will receive your results in five to seven days

Why Westminster?

We are the one of the largest IELTS testing facilities in the UK and deliver the IELTS test to over 2,000 candidates each year.

We offer the IELTS test on up to three Saturdays per month throughout the year. All four test components, including the speaking test, are held on the same day, in the same place. We provide comfortable and friendly exam conditions, and our wall-mounted speakers give a better quality of sound during the listening test.

IELTS for visa purposes

On 20 February 2015, the UK government announced important changes to Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for visa purposes.

If you make a visa application to stay in or move to the UK, you need to be aware of changes made by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

You can read more about these changes on the page on applying for a visa and the IELTS page on UK Visas and Immigration.
