As part of the World in Westminster café series, and for the first time in the long history of the institution, the University of Westminster hosted a large-scale evening of cultural celebration, laughter and camaraderie as part of its Nowruz festivities on 15 March.

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is a cherished tradition observed by various cultures and people in and from West and Central Asia; including in Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Nowruz is also an important festival for Kurdish and Zoroastrian people around the world. The event was held on the University’s Little Titchfield Campus and brought together students, colleagues and community members to welcome the arrival of spring.

In the spirit of the World in Westminster series, the event showcased global and local diversity: a reminder of the power of cultural exchange and the importance of coming together. The event was a testament to the power of cultural festivities and traditions and an educational experience for all. Attendees listened to traditional Persian music, watched dance performances and sampled food from Iran and Uzbekistan.

Professor Dibyesh Anand, University of Westminster Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement and Employability and Co-Chair of the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee said: “We are delighted to celebrate festivals that are important to our diverse community of students not only because it promotes a sense of belonging but also inter-cultural exchange. We are especially grateful to our student Maryam Sadat Seyedsalehi who worked extremely hard on the event and ensured every attendee felt included.”

Principal Lecturer in Social Sciences and Academic Director of the Democratic Education Network (DEN) Dr Farhang Morady joined Professor Anand in welcoming everyone to the celebration. He said: “I was thrilled to participate in the Nowruz celebration with the Democratic Education Network. The vibrant atmosphere, delightful music, delicious food and diverse attendance from both on and off-campus elevated our University's reputation. It was an experience that left us feeling proud and inspired.”

This event directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing.
