WASD, based at Queen Mary University of London, is a unique global forum that brings together people from across the globe to discuss key issues relating to science and technology management that impact the world sustainable development.

Dr Tewfik received an appreciation award, consisting of a medal and a certificate, from the WASD in recognition of his “valuable and outstanding contribution” to the public health nutrition field at a global level. Specifically, Dr Tewfik was recognised for the continuous progress of the University of Westminster’s research agenda to promote public health nutrition intervention programmes in countries such as India, Georgia, Ghana, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

For example, Dr Tewfik has developed an independent research path that underpins the pivotal role of clinical nutrition to combat undernourishment among vulnerable populations in developing countries. These tailored nutrition interventions have improved clinical outcomes of undernourished populations and assured sustained optimum nutrition among underweight/stunted school children in Ghana; cancer cachexic patients in India; and people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Nigeria to delay the progression of HIV to AIDS.

Speaking about how it feels to have been recognised by the WASD, Dr Tewfik said: “I would like to begin by extending a big thank you to all the researchers and collaborators who have contributed significantly to our impactful sustainable nutrition intervention strategies in different countries. Without them, I would not have been able to achieve what I have been awarded for.

“Receiving an honour medal and certificate from WASD is a great accomplishment and a moment of pride, joy and gratitude. May I take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation to the University of Westminster’s staff, students and technical team who have encouraged and supported me throughout my 24-year journey in the public health domain. I am much obliged and delighted to dedicate this medal and certificate to University of Westminster - thank you, Westminster!”
