The Role of Stock Allocation in Profitability

Overview

Course summary

An often underrated element of the buying and merchandising process is the management of stock from DC to stores – allocation and replenishment.

The best designed and bought ranges will always miss sales and profit potential if the stock isn’t sent out to stores in the most appropriate way. That means trading stock to the right place in the right quantities at the right time – failure to do this well leads to overstocks, markdowns and unnecessary profit loss.

All stores are different in terms of demographic and location therefore products have a myriad of features including price, colour, fabric and seasonality. The challenge of targeting stock appropriately to these variances and attributes is a fascinating and rewarding area of fashion retailing.

Too often, businesses assume that this can all be done by a system but human intervention in the process is to truly achieve potential.

It is fundamentally a course about managing stock volumes but commercially linking them to the key store and product profiles that drive sales growth. No matter if you have 2 or 200 stores, the same principles apply.
