Streets, Places and Active Transport

Overview

Course summary

This course introduces transport professionals to the principles of urban streets, movement, and place functions. You will explore how different transport modes interact within urban street environments, with a focus on walking, cycling, and shared spaces. Practical exercises and real-world case studies help analyse street environments and develop solutions to improve accessibility, safety, and equity.

The course is delivered in person at our Marylebone campus, with interactive sessions led by expert tutors including visits to sites that illustrate the course content.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will typically be able to:

  • Analyse traffic patterns and street usage in urban areas.
  • Evaluate street-level interventions for their impact on movement, safety, and equity.
  • Develop design solutions to balance the needs of different transport modes.
  • Present evidence-based recommendations for street improvements.

Our tutor

Dr Tom Cohen, Reader in Transport Policy at University of Westminster and member of the university's Active Travel Academy.

Tom has a doctorate in environmental studies and has been teaching transport for eight years.  Before moving into the higher-education sector, Tom spent ten years in transport consultancy, a considerable part of which was dedicated to promoting behaviour change.

Entry requirements

A first degree in a relevant subject is recommended. Understanding of urban planning concepts is beneficial.

Course structure

Delegates will:

  • Explore the movement vs. place concept in urban streets
  • Review policy approaches for non-motorised transport
  • Analyse street-level interventions through case studies
  • Develop and present design exercises
  • Consider equity and social impacts in transport design

Teaching and assessment

The course normally consists of 12 sessions of three hours. In 2026, sessions will take place on consecutive Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm, running from 20 January to 7 April.

The sessions will involve lectures from staff and expert guests, and group exercises and discussions. There is also an emphasis on visiting relevant sites in the London area, so not all sessions will take place in Marylebone.

There are two pieces of assessed coursework:

  • An illustrated essay in which you will discuss a street (section) or small area of your choice, with reference to a street-design guide/philosophy also of your choice.

  • A written report prepared in small groups, together with a short presentation, on improving the performance of a street (or area) through design and management interventions.

Accreditation

This course is part of the University of Westminster's MSc in Transport Planning. Successful completion earns credits towards a full MSc, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate.
