Global Media MA- 2022

I was surprised by how easily I was able to adapt to the city and the study environment of Westminster. Before moving to London, I heard people saying that the city could become overwhelming sometimes. However, it did not take me long to settle in and find the right people around me. Now I am thriving and loving every single bit of my life here. I believe the University of Westminster played a huge part in helping me land on my feet with its resources and network.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

Before deciding to study in the UK, I did a fair amount of research about the best universities for media studies in London. I also asked many of my friends studying in the city. The University of Westminster would always appear at the top of my list. I learned that the University provides courses in various fields of media, supported by outstanding resources, facilities and career opportunities. In addition, as the University had strong connections with several media outlets in China, where I grew up and could potentially work in the future, I believed it would be beneficial for my career path to study here.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Before moving to London, I lived and studied in two other international cities, Vancouver and Tokyo. My experience has taught me that a significant part of learning comes from the time spent outside of the curriculum. In that sense, London is the perfect city for any student. For example, as someone truly passionate about films, the long list of London's indie cinemas has allowed me to see the film industry from a brand new perspective.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

The course is already quite impressive, and I’ve learned many new perspectives about the media industry. The academic team on our course is very diverse in terms of cultural backgrounds. They have helped me to develop new ideas and identify career opportunities. Additionally, various guest speakers take over our lectures from time to time, and I always find their experiences and insights very interesting and enlightening.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The course leaders and academic staff are always there to offer help. If I ever want to share my thoughts with the lecturers after class, they are always available to help and keen to have further discussions. Even if someone struggles with certain modules, they are always provided additional support.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

Although not exclusively related to my course, the library played a huge part in my degree. The wide range of academic resources provided crucial help when I was writing my dissertation, and the library staff were always friendly and available to help when I needed assistance. Even when I did not have any assignments to complete, sometimes I still chose to spend time in the library. It's a peaceful environment, and you can always bump into other like-minded people.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

I used the 'Ask a Mentor' service to connect with someone already in the media industry and learn more about their career. The entire process was quite straightforward, and I met with a Westminster alumnus currently working as a director in the commercial industry. Her stories and advice helped me develop a much deeper understanding of the industry.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

When I first moved to London, I attended a public film screening at Northwick Park that the Westminster Student Union arranged. It was a refreshing experience, as I had never been to an outdoor cinema before, and I got to meet some of my future coursemates. The event gave me a taster of what it would be like to study at the University of Westminster, and it helped me make friends before my course started, which helped me adjust to the new city and the environment more easily.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice would be not to be afraid to reach out for help, whether for academic support or something personal. You are in an environment where people are more than happy to give you all the support and encouragement you might need. There are many resources available within the University that could lead you to experiences that you did not know were available to you, so be brave and explore!

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

I am enjoying the London life the most as a student at the University of Westminster. There is always so much to see and do in London, and it is also very easy to travel to other European cities to explore new cultures and landscapes. The University also hosts various activities from time to time to help students to explore the city.
