Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster because of its strong reputation for combining academic learning with practical, industry-focused experience. The Computer Science course offered a broad range of modules covering areas such as software engineering, artificial intelligence, data science and cybersecurity, which aligned with my interests and career goals.

Another factor that stood out was Westminster's location in the heart of London. Being surrounded by leading technology companies, networking events and career opportunities meant I could gain valuable industry experience alongside my studies. Looking back, choosing Westminster has given me the knowledge, confidence and opportunities to grow both academically and professionally.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been an incredible experience. As one of the world's leading technology hubs, London has given me access to opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Throughout my degree, I have attended industry conferences, networking events, workshops and employer insight days, allowing me to learn from professionals and build valuable connections.

The city has also enabled me to gain practical work experience while studying, helping me apply what I learned at university to real-world projects. Being surrounded by such a diverse and innovative environment has motivated me to keep learning, embrace new challenges and explore different areas of technology. Studying in London has played a significant role in preparing me for my future career.

Tell us about your course and what have you particularly enjoyed?

One of the things I have enjoyed most about studying Computer Science at Westminster is how practical and varied the course has been. We explored a wide range of topics, including software engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, databases, cybersecurity and web development, while applying our knowledge through hands-on projects and coursework. I particularly enjoyed being able to solve real-world problems using technology, which ultimately inspired my final-year project, CardioX. The course challenged me to think creatively, work independently and continuously develop both my technical and problem-solving skills.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The support from lecturers has been excellent throughout my degree. They were always approachable, encouraging and willing to provide guidance whenever I needed it. Their feedback helped me continuously improve my work, particularly during my final-year project, where regular discussions and constructive advice played an important role in developing my ideas. I always felt encouraged to ask questions, explore new technologies and challenge myself, which made my learning experience both enjoyable and rewarding.                                 

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

'The specialist computing laboratories and collaborative learning spaces provided an excellent environment for both individual and group work. Having access to modern software, development tools and dedicated computing facilities made it easier to work on practical coursework and my final-year project. The University's central London location was also a significant advantage, providing easy access to technology events, networking opportunities and industry conferences that complemented my studies.

How has Zone29 - our home of careers and enterprise - helped you with your career journey?

Zone29 has been a valuable part of my career journey. Through careers events, employer networking opportunities, workshops and careers support, I was able to build my confidence, improve my professional skills and connect with employers across the technology industry. These opportunities helped me develop my CV, strengthen my interview skills and gain a better understanding of graduate careers. The University's strong links with industry, together with the support available through Zone29, gave me the confidence to take the next step into my career after graduation.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

Alongside my studies, I actively sought opportunities to develop my skills and gain industry experience outside the classroom. I attended technology conferences, networking events and employer insight days across London, where I connected with professionals and learned about emerging trends in software engineering and artificial intelligence.

I also completed several professional learning programmes and certifications to broaden my technical knowledge and practical skills. In addition, I balanced my degree with a part-time role as a Data and Information Analyst within an NHS cardiology department, which gave me valuable real-world experience and ultimately inspired my final-year project, CardioX.

One of the highlights of my university journey has been having my final-year project selected for the University of Westminster Final Year Showcase, where I had the opportunity to present my work to industry professionals. These experiences have strengthened my technical abilities, communication skills and confidence, while reinforcing my passion for developing technology that can make a meaningful real-world impact.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Make the most of every opportunity beyond the classroom. Attend careers events, network with industry professionals, take part in competitions, build personal projects and don't be afraid to ask questions. Westminster offers so many opportunities, but it's up to you to take advantage of them. The more you get involved, the more you'll grow, both personally and professionally.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

For me, the best aspect has been the combination of practical learning and access to industry. Being based in central London meant I could attend technology events, connect with professionals and gain valuable work experience while studying. Combined with the University's supportive lecturers and hands-on approach to learning, it created an environment that helped me grow in confidence and prepare for my career.

What’s the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

 The most surprising aspect was how many opportunities became available once I started getting involved. From networking events and industry talks to showcasing my final-year project to professionals, I realised that university is about much more than earning a degree. It gave me opportunities to develop professionally, build meaningful connections and discover the areas of technology I am most passionate about.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your Westminster experience?

Looking back, studying at the University of Westminster has been a journey of continuous learning, growth and opportunity. It has challenged me to think differently, develop practical skills and push beyond my comfort zone. I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved during my time here, particularly developing CardioX and having the opportunity to present it at the Final Year Showcase. I am grateful to the lecturers, staff and classmates who supported me throughout my journey, and I look forward to applying everything I have learned as I begin my career in technology.
