Master of Architecture (MArch) (RIBA pt II)- 2020

The quality of teaching on the course was first-class, whether in a lecture format or a 1:1 setting. All the staff members were very approachable and supportive.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

Whilst applying for my Master’s degree, I felt it was imperative to be in central London, where I would have the best opportunities to meet and engage with future employees. There is no better place to study, with world-leading museums, galleries and libraries on your doorstep. I was also impressed by the quality of teaching and facilities within the university.

How has your experience been studying in London?

My experience was fantastic and one that I shall cherish forever. The support I received from the staff was exceptional and allowed me to develop myself academically and personally. The environment fostered at the university allows students to continually push themselves beyond their perceived boundaries while maintaining a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere to study.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

For a creative course such as Architecture, I feel it is important to be as free as possible in your work. The freedom to explore, question and interrogate the subject was an aspect of the course which I thoroughly enjoyed. On the course, students are expected to write their briefs for coursework on self-generated topics. This allowed me to research topics which I felt most passionate about. The creative freedom also allowed a great breadth of work amongst students, which was inspiring.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The quality of teaching on the course was first-class, whether in a lecture format or a 1:1 setting. All the staff members were very approachable and supportive.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The studio spaces to work in are open plan, light and freely accessible to anyone who wishes to work in the building. The library also contains a dedicated and comprehensive array of architectural literature. However, the stand-out facility for architecture students is the Fab Lab, where all students can build, prototype, and test their designs with state-of-the-art machines and technology.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

I was very lucky as I gained employment through my university design tutor whilst I was still studying. Some of the design tutors at the university also run their own architectural practices. This, for me, was a compelling aspect of the course as I could always discuss my ideas and designs with individuals who actively work in the profession. There is no better way to learn and develop than to seek advice and knowledge from those you aspire to be one day.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

During my time at Westminster, I was fortunate enough to go on two study trips to Europe and other frequent day trips to sites in London and the wider regions. These field trips were fantastic for broadening my knowledge of different cultures and stimulating creativity. They were also great for building relationships and friendships with peers. My time at Westminster was punctuated with my final design project winning the prestigious RIBA Silver Medal award, an incredible honour and something that I owe ultimately to the University.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

I would encourage everyone to fully commit and get involved with life at Westminster. Your time here is ultimately a springboard for you to have access to. The friendships and connections you make here are special and everlasting.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The location is hard to beat; you walk out the door and have the city at your fingertips. Whatever you need will be either in the university itself or a short walk away.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

I was very surprised at the great community feel amongst students and staff. Although Westminster is a large university, there is a great sense of warmth and encouragement throughout.
