Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) MA – 2023

I appreciated the programme’s strong focus on innovation, particularly its exploration of technology in language teaching, which aligned with my passion for modern pedagogy.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster for my MA in TESOL because of its strong reputation in language education and its practical approach to teaching English. The course provided a perfect balance of theory and hands-on experience, equipping me with the skills to teach diverse learners effectively. The university’s central London location also gave me access to a multicultural environment, which enriched my studies by exposing me to different teaching methodologies and language-learning communities. The knowledgeable and supportive faculty played a key role in my decision, making Westminster the ideal place to develop my career in language education.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been an incredible experience. I loved immersing myself in the city’s vibrant culture - exploring its arts scene, enjoying diverse food, and training in London’s parks as a triathlon enthusiast. The city’s international atmosphere also enhanced my learning, allowing me to engage with different languages and teaching methods in real-world contexts. While the TESOL MA programme was intensive, I found ways to balance my studies with personal growth, including traveling to 41 countries during my time in the UK. This not only broadened my global perspective but also enriched my understanding of different languages and cultures - something that has deeply influenced my approach to teaching. Overall, my time in London was both academically and personally fulfilling, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about the TESOL MA was the diversity of perspectives within the course - my classmates and professors brought insights from various cultural and educational backgrounds, creating a dynamic learning environment. I also appreciated the programme’s strong focus on innovation, particularly its exploration of technology in language teaching, which aligned with my passion for modern pedagogy. The opportunity to apply theory in practical settings made the learning experience even more rewarding, preparing me to confidently step into the field of TESOL.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic and lecturer support at Westminster was exceptional. My lecturers were always approachable, offering valuable feedback and encouragement throughout my studies. Dr. Sean Sutherland, the course leader, and Professor Heather Pagan, my supervisor, played a key role in guiding my research and helping me achieve my full potential. Their support and mentorship gave me the confidence to push my boundaries and succeed.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The university’s library was an invaluable resource, providing access to a vast collection of TESOL-related books, journals, and digital materials that supported my research. The modern seminar rooms and interactive language labs fostered engaging discussions and hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, the online learning platform was well-structured, making it easy to access course materials and stay engaged with lectures and assignments.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

One of the most memorable experiences was attending an opera in London with my teachers and classmates, thanks to tickets provided by the university. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with London’s rich cultural scene while bonding with faculty and fellow students outside of the academic setting. Moments like these made my time at Westminster even more special, blending academic growth with cultural enrichment.
