Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster because I wanted a university that would prepare me for my future career, rather than only giving me academic knowledge. I also saw opportunities to build a professional network, gain experience and make connections that could be valuable when looking for internships or employment after graduation.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Being based in London was another major factor for me. There is access to such a wide range of companies, industry professionals, networking events and career opportunities.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I chose Music Production, Performance and Business BA because it combines three areas that are very important to me: production, performance and the business side of the music industry.

The production side has helped me develop my mixing and mastering skills, as composing was already one of my strengths. The performance element encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. Even though I do not perform myself, I have enjoyed learning about the technical side, such as live sound.

The business side is also helping me understand how to market and brand myself in a way that attracts customers.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

I’ve found the support from my lecturers very helpful throughout my studies. They have been approachable and supportive, and I feel comfortable asking questions when I need clarification or guidance. I’ve also received useful feedback on my work, which has helped me understand where I can improve and develop my skills further.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

Definitely. The live sound facilities and equipment stand out to me. I was already used to the production side, such as mixing and working practically with bands, but learning about live sound was new to me. The lecturers have allowed me to explore the technology, which I’ve found really interesting.

I’m also looking forward to learning more about the business side of the course in my third year.

How has Zone29, our home of careers and enterprise, helped you with your career journey?

Zone29 has been useful in helping me think more seriously about my career beyond university. It has given me access to careers guidance and resources that have helped me understand what I need to do to prepare for working in the music industry.
Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

I do quite a lot outside my course. I attend studio sessions and have worked with artists in the music industry. I’ve been doing this for six years, since 2020, when I was still very young, but I made it work and my beats are continuing to do well.
I’m part of a collective called Disonanz, and we put on our own shows. I’ve also built a wide range of connections, particularly with Italian artists, so I’ve had opportunities to work internationally. I produced a freestyle for an Italian artist that has now reached around 100,000 views on TikTok.

I’m only 21 and moving into my final year, so it feels crazy to have already achieved this much. I’m very grateful.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice would be to use the opportunity to make as many connections as possible. The University provides lots of opportunities, such as the Area 51 sessions every Wednesday. Sign up, take part and perform.

Get out of your comfort zone and do not stay at home all day. Go to shows, make music and use all the resources the University gives you, including the studios and live spaces. Be consistent, start creating content and use platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to market yourself. Take time to understand how marketing works, too.

What’s the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

For me, the best aspect is the combination of studying in London and having access to such a diverse, creative and professional environment. As a Music Production, Performance and Business student, being in London gives me exposure to a huge music and entertainment industry. It also creates opportunities to meet different people and build professional connections.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The most surprising part of my Westminster experience has been how much the course has developed my understanding of the business side of the music industry. Before starting, I was mainly focused on the creative side, particularly music production and performance. I’ve since realised how important networking, marketing, promotion and understanding the industry are when building a successful career.

Another unexpected experience was being featured in a blog created by a third-year student for her assignment. She has since shared it with other people, which was really nice.
