The dedicated animation studios are a huge advantage, they are well-equipped with everything you need and they are open until late. Another important asset is access to industry-standard software, mastering these tools is vital when it comes to building a successful career in animation. The workshops are also amazing, they have a large and accessible variety of materials that you can experiment and be creative. The Regent Street Cinema is a fantastic facility, it’s truly amazing to have access to a venue with such historical value and to be able to screen our films there.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
I chose the University of Westminster because of its strong reputation and the well-established Animation BA course, which offered everything I was looking for including excellent facilities and a wide range of opportunities. What truly stood out to me was the partnership with Aardman Animations and the chance to learn directly from industry professionals. I knew this would be invaluable in helping me develop the skills and experience needed for a successful career in animation.
How has your experience been studying in London?
Studying in London has been an incredible experience. I’ve really enjoyed the city’s rich culture and diversity, it offers so much to explore and learn from. One of the biggest advantages of studying here is the wealth of opportunities available. Being in such a well-connected city has opened doors for me that I might never have encountered elsewhere.
Of course, keeping up with university life while adjusting to the fast pace of London can be a bit overwhelming at times. It wasn’t easy to adapt at first, but it’s absolutely been worth it. I’ve met some amazing people along the way who have made me feel welcomed and helped me find a sense of home here.
Tell us about your course and what have you particularly enjoyed?
The Animation course has been amazing so far. I really like how well it balances technical skills with academic knowledge. One thing that I enjoyed was working with Stop-Motion, this programme made me develop a genuine love for it. It's truly amazing to see how easily you can bring an object to life. I also appreciate the emphasis on storytelling and narrative, it has been a great aid in learning how to properly develop a story.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
I've found the academic and lecturer support extremely helpful during my studies. The lecturers are approachable and willing to help. They are very passionate about what they teach, which is important in my opinion and they strive to make sure that we understand everything. I appreciate that while they are really encouraging, they also give out great constructive feedback.
Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
There are some stand-out facilities that I find extremely helpful. The dedicated animation studios are a huge advantage, they are well-equipped with everything you need and they are open until late which is great especially when you need to complete an assignment. Another important asset is access to industry-standard software, mastering these tools is vital when it comes to building a successful career in animation. The workshops are also amazing, they have a large and accessible variety of materials that you can work with, I find having spaces where you can experiment and be creative very helpful. Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course
I've had the chance to take part in a lot of fantastic activities outside of my course. One of the highlights was participating and winning an award at the Strictly Stop-Motion competition. It was a great experience and it encouraged me to experiment with lots of different stop-motion techniques. I also had the opportunity to attend the In Motion Festival, which was amazing, we got to see many different animations and meet industry professionals. Additionally, I have participated in a few animation workshops and masterclasses such as the Aardman Academy Storyboarding Foundation, this course has helped me tremendously in understanding the technical aspects of storyboarding and overall been a great opportunity to expand my knowledge.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
My advice would be to take full advantage of the facilities and everything that Westminster has to offer. Be as creative and as spontaneous as you can. And it's always a great idea to get involved in extracurricular activities be it competitions or events.
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
I'd say the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student is being surrounded by amazing and creative people and having access to a lot of opportunities that come with living in London and studying at this university.
What’s the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
I was pleasantly surprised to find how supportive and welcoming the environment is, there is always someone willing to offer feedback or help you, and it really brings a sense of community.
Your thoughts?
Westminster continues to surprise me with what there is to offer and just how large of an organisation it is. Within the university, there are many services to boost your CV and career side, but also many societies to meet like-minded people and friends. There are many things that you can be a part of, you just need to be proactive and reach out!
