International Business BA – 2024

Studying in London has been an unforgettable experience, with the city overflowing with events and the chance to meet diverse individuals; for me, there has never been a dull moment!

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster because the opportunities sparkled with promise, and its location in a lively city made me feel at home. Having lived abroad most of my life, the course International Business combined my love for culture and learning, and the assignments allowed me to explore interests across numerous industries and topics. I sensed that there were still avenues for me to engage and stand out, as other universities made me feel like I would be a small fish in a big sea, and luckily, I didn't feel that way at the University of Westminster.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been an unforgettable experience, with the city overflowing with events and the chance to meet diverse individuals; for me, there has never been a dull moment! The University has cultivated a community where educators are consistently approachable, receptive to student feedback, and proactive in offering real-world opportunities through financial assistance and trips. Outside of university, I have attended many theatre shows, markets and activities, as there is always something new happening in London; it definitely helps when you get a student discount in most places, too!

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I couldn't have selected a more suitable and captivating course. This course has made me curious, from exploring topics ranging from aerospace to pharmaceutical industries to engaging in presentations and collaborative work.

The modules that I particularly loved were Project Management, Innovative Consultancy Solutions, Communication, and International Business Research, to mention some of the many excellent modules. Additionally, in the last three years, we have been able to go on trips to the Financial Times and Royal Courts of Justice, along with the students who chose to study abroad or participate in placements and volunteering.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

By accepting the role of Course Representative in my final year, I have been able to act as a voice between fellow students and course leaders, potentially provoking real change. My course leaders, Sylvia Snijders, Thanos Fragkandreas, and Deborah Knowles, have consistently offered fantastic support and readiness to help any of us students.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The resources that have proven valuable to me include access to Grammarly Premium, a subscription to the Financial Times, access to the Adobe Suite, and an abundance of exciting guest lectures. There is also an option to study a foreign language as an elective; I took the opportunity to study French during my first two years, recognising its significant role in international work opportunities.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

I participated in the Career Mentoring Scheme. During the programme, I was partnered with an expert in the aviation industry, aligning with my interest in working in aerospace. I received guidance and support for CV writing, job application, and general mentorship; it was a valuable experience.

I also completed the University of Westminster Employability Award at Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. I had to prove my skills and dedication to my course and future by completing various tasks that would award me points. The tasks included writing reflections, completing career assessments, keeping records of internships and part-time work, volunteering, and attending online and in-person talks/events.

I thoroughly enjoyed this award as it allowed me to make time for matters that would enhance the future of my employability. Engaging in these experiences never imposed additional stress on my schedule, as they were personal pursuits I could manage at my own pace and complete whenever I felt prepared.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

A significant moment for me was when I founded and presided over the Art Society, which encouraged creativity and collaboration. The intention of starting the Art Society was formed so that various mediums of acrylic, oil, and other tools could be used by students interested in art who may need access to them. I planned and held both small and large-scale events with my friends; which elevated my enthusiasm for event planning, with the support of the Student Union. I fortunately won the 'President of the Year' and 'Best Emerging Society' awards in 2023.

Regarding societies, I am an active member of the pole dance society, and I regularly participate in the free yoga and pilates classes held weekly. These free activities have been meaningful to me in maintaining a healthy balance between my academic commitments and social life without accumulating too much financial burden! I have also made many wonderful friends along the way.

I had the incredible opportunity to live and study in the beautiful city of Copenhagen, Denmark. During this time, I attended Copenhagen Business School, where I was accepted into the Financial Accounting summer programme. I am grateful to the University of Westminster for covering the tuition fees and accepting me for the Global Experience Funding that financed my stay in Copenhagen.

Similarly, I also participated in Westminster Working Cultures; I spent my time in Brussels and Paris, hearing from alumni who have become professionals in their fields. From the EU Parliament to Finance and Journalism, we covered a range of careers that helped me reflect on where I might want to end up. These experiences are just a few among the many cherished memories I've made at the University of Westminster and in London.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

London can be overwhelming, often leaving many feeling lost; however, at the University of Westminster, you'll discover a community that helps you navigate the city and turn it into a place of familiarity and comfort. Make the most of your time and the opportunities available, as there is so much on offer if you look for it.

Maybe I am biased, but I would also highly recommend the International Business course to those interested, though my friends across the other campuses and courses love what they study, too!

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

As previously mentioned, the central London location is undoubtedly the best aspect. Coming from Bangkok, I was consistently concerned about finding a place that matched the lively atmosphere, yet London exceeded all expectations. I am based at the Westminster Business School campus by Baker Street station; surrounding me is delicious food, lovely parks and convenient transportation links, so it really couldn't get any better!

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The University of Westminster has many systems to support student entrepreneurs (WeNetwork), part-time roles during studies, and global exposure. For instance, the Talent Bank has paid temporary and part-time work across all campuses and various departments within the University of Westminster.

The most unexpected aspect of my Westminster experience was the part-time roles I took on during my studies. I've been a student bartender at the Undercroft bar and a social media ambassador during my studies, creating content for the university's official platforms; both roles allowed me to earn money around my timetable. Before attending university, I assumed I would work part-time externally; however, these roles allowed me to get more involved with the university.
