Multimedia Journalism (Broadcast) MA – 2024
I enjoyed the practical side of things, such as producing a TV feature and radio documentary.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
I chose to study at the University of Westminster because of the warm reception I received from the staff and the impressive facilities available for my specific course. When I visited the Harrow Campus during an Open Day, I was immediately struck by how helpful and approachable the staff were—they took the time to provide comprehensive information about the course, answering all my questions and ensuring I had a clear understanding of what to expect. The campus facilities further reinforced my decision, as they offered state-of-the-art equipment and resources that are essential for practical learning and skill development in my field. Additionally, I found it particularly beneficial that the university offers a specialised option in broadcast journalism, which aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. The combination of supportive staff, excellent facilities, and tailored course options made Westminster the ideal choice for me to pursue my studies and prepare for a successful future in the media industry.
What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?
The Multimedia Journalism (Broadcast) skills really allowed me to focus on the broadcast skills I had already gained through my undergraduate course. I particularly enjoyed the practical side of things, such as producing a TV feature and radio documentary. The focus on creating content for social media was also something I enjoyed, especially as social media's influence in the industry is becoming more prevalent.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
The academic support at Westminster was great. Many of my lecturers were readily available and quick to respond to emails outside of scheduled classes, which was incredibly helpful whenever I needed feedback or clarification on any aspect of my coursework or assignments. Additionally, my supervisor was especially supportive, consistently checking in to ensure I had all the necessary resources and guidance to succeed. They provided detailed and constructive feedback, which was instrumental in helping my project progress smoothly and meet its objectives. Overall, the level of academic support I received made me feel valued and confident in my ability to excel, knowing I had dedicated staff members willing to go the extra mile to help me succeed.
Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
The new TV studio was always a great room to learn, as it reflected well what it would be like when transitioning to industry-level technology. The podcast suites were equally as good as the studio and ensured that any voice work, we carried out was of the best quality and sounded professional. I particularly enjoyed booking out a suite for my practical work.
Beyond just professional development, these roles also introduced me to some amazing people—I made great friends and built lasting relationships that extended well beyond the workplace. I’m really grateful for the Careers and Employability Service for opening so many doors and making my university journey so rewarding.
Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course
During my time at the University, I served as the student course representative, which allowed me to actively participate in meetings with other student representatives and course leaders. In this role, I was responsible for providing valuable feedback from my classmates to help improve the course and overall student experience. I acted as the official voice for members of my class, representing their concerns, suggestions, and ideas to academic team. This experience helped me develop strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, as well as a deeper understanding of how educational institutions operate and the importance of student advocacy.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
For those considering studying at Westminster, I would encourage you not to hesitate to ask questions and seek out information. Transitioning into higher education can be a nerve-wracking experience, full of new challenges and uncertainties, but the university’s staff is incredibly supportive, approachable, and genuinely willing to assist you in any way they can. Whether you have concerns about course options, campus facilities, accommodation, or student services, reaching out and asking questions will help you gain clarity and confidence in your decision-making process.
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
The community—The University is so diverse, with students from around the world. Had it not been for the university's incredible efforts to embrace different cultures and be welcoming to international students, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet some of the most incredible friends I have today.
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
What surprised me the most was the incredible level of effort that goes into making the university experience enjoyable and memorable for all students. The University consistently organises a wide range of events and activities designed to foster a sense of community, encourage social interaction, and provide opportunities for students to have fun outside of their academic commitments. These events not only help students relax and enjoy their time at university but also create a supportive environment where they can form meaningful connections and friendships. Westminster truly values the importance of community and actively promotes connecting students beyond their individual courses, emphasising a rounded approach to student life that enhances personal growth, collaboration, and a sense of belonging on campus.
