Diploma in Architecture and Urban Design (Polytechnic of Central London) – 1984

What are you doing now?

As an architectural theorist and publisher, my focus is now on drawing from my own long and fruitful experience designing and executing a range of architectural projects at diverse scales from interior design through to new-build and rehabilitation, and also large-scale urban design works, both in the private and public sectors in the UK and in Spain.

What did you find most valuable about your course at Westminster?

As described in my most recent publication, Cities In The Mind, the years at the former Polytechnic of Central London were the most illuminating and rewarding part of my whole academic career, not only with regard to an approach that englobes a comprehensive understanding of detailed, cultural, technical and social aspects, but especially with regard to the conceptualisation of architecture within the wider urban context.

Why would you recommend Westminster as a place to study?

My impression of studying for the Diploma in Architecture and Urban Design was characterised by a demanding and intense academic level, both technically and culturally, with a diverse and fascinating range of opportunities that gave rise to both a very rewarding experience, superior academic title and, finally, the award of the 'de Vere Urban Design Prize'.

What was the best thing about being a student in London?

The very wide range of cultural, social and academic opportunities that complement university studies was what I enjoyed and valued most about studying in the UK capital.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career to you?

I would advise any aspiring architecture student to get very well informed about the different routes available to study and work as an architect and urban designer, as outlined in my book Cities In The Mind, both at an academic level and as a professional practitioner, and to be ready to squeeze out every single moment of that precious period of one’s life.
