Illustration BA Hons- 2022 (expected)

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

What made me choose the University of Westminster was the practical nature of the course; it offers students creative freedom to find their voice, while giving them the tools needed to experiment with new media. The career advice workshops organised by the University also help you to build a professional network so that you can find a job that suits you.

How has your experience been studying in London?

My mind has really expanded since studying at Westminster. London has so many different cultures and unique perspectives in it and there is always something to do. You can only learn more and get a deeper understanding of the world and yourself by studying here.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

The Illustration course holds many practical workshops and tutorials for students to learn new software and experimental techniques. I’ve also really enjoyed all of our comprehensive lectures and the creative freedom we have with our assignments.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic staff are very engaged and you can really feel that they are prioritising students' progress and development. They are always available to help, and you are offered feedback and guidance through one-to-one tutorials and group sessions. As long as you are proactive with your learning, you will get all the guidance needed to reach your professional goals.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The facilities are great! There are 3D printers, spaces for 3D scanning, VR and AR headsets for students to use in their learning, a silkscreen printing studio, laser cutting facilities, a ceramic studio, Wacom display tablets and the list goes on. We also regularly get the opportunity to meet and talk with professionals from the art industry.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

I joined the Careers and Employability Service’s mentoring scheme to improve my CV and get some career advice. They offered me excellent advice and I really appreciate how they encourage students to set up their own businesses. They also send out a monthly newsletter that has job listings for students. I have felt very supported throughout my studies.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

I went on a trip to Berlin with my class. We visited important historical sites and museums. It was a great social and cultural experience and the goal was to create a visual journal of our experience and impression of the city. I’m also a member of the Film Society in the University’s Students’ Union. We meet up monthly to watch great movies and then discuss them together. The society is perfect for cinematography enthusiasts.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

The University encourages students to use their own creative voice. To succeed in your course, you need to be proactive, have a positive mindset and hold a certain amount of perseverance to continue improving. This means you have to be consistent with your research and study time. Equally, it’s important not to stress yourself out and remember that every student works at their own pace. My advice would be to keep an open mind, don’t take criticism too personally and ask for feedback at every stage of your projects. Enjoy the process!
