Documentary Photography and Photojournalism MA – 2021

The mix of practical and theoretical work has allowed me to tailor the course to meet my own interests. I’ve particularly enjoyed how my conceptual thinking has been supported by the academic staff. I’ve also been encouraged to speak publicly (in front of other peers) about my work, which in return has improved my confidence.

How has your experience been studying in London?

I’ve really enjoyed living in London as I’m so close to various photography galleries and other interesting museums.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

The mix of practical and theoretical work has allowed me to tailor the course to meet my own interests. I’ve particularly enjoyed how the academic staff has supported my conceptual thinking. I’ve also been encouraged to speak publicly (in front of other peers) about my work, which has improved my confidence.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

I’ve found the academic support to be very good. We’ve had a good mix of staff, guest lecturers and artists teaching us, and it’s been really fascinating. I’ve been able to learn a lot from all of them.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The University has great facilities. I’ve enjoyed all the facilities available to photography students, especially the printing rooms, darkrooms and the light studios.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

I attended the Paris Photo (an international exhibition) in November 2018. I also volunteered at numerous museums and galleries, which were not directly related to my course, but I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed them.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Think ahead to your future career. How can you tailor your modules and the work you produce to impress potential employers? For example, at Westminster, I chose to write an optional dissertation instead of being involved in the traditional ‘end of year exhibition’. I believed that by producing such a substantial piece of research work, I would be more ‘employable’ in the heritage sector (my chosen career path). I secured my first paid role with the Imperial War Museum off the back of this research.
