BSc Biomedical Science

My name is Bibi, and I was very fortunate to be part of the Westminster Working Cultures (WWC) UK programme in September 2020.

It was an incredible experience to be a part of. I got to meet inspiring individuals and I learnt so much from the speakers about what happens after graduation and personal and professional development, all of which I apply to my journey now.

I was granted the role of WWC Ambassador in my final year, which was so valuable to me as I learnt many new skills, for example what happens behind the scenes of an event, from doing market research to creating a promotional video. The biggest bonus was working with an incredible team and Tierney who was always positive and uplifting every time we had a meeting/session.

Fast forward to nearly a year later, I have graduated with a first-class honour in Biomedical Science.

I am currently working as a medical laboratory assistant (MLA) in my local hospital in North London. My main duties as an MLA are to handle the incoming samples from GPs, inpatients, or A&E in the lab, process them by labelling them correctly and booking them into the laboratory system, before giving them to the correct department to be tested.

Alongside that, I also volunteer in the haematology ward where I have been able to practice laboratory techniques like making blood films or getting involved with COVID testing.

I really appreciate the position I am in now, knowing how difficult it is to land a job straight after graduation, but it was not easy after completing hundreds of applications and doing multiple interviews.
