Multimedia Journalism MA

Why did you choose to study at Westminster, and how did it contribute to your career?

I wanted to study journalism at a reputable university in London. My course was very practical and I learnt the fundamentals of journalism, radio and TV production that led me to obtain my first media job in news programmes at the BBC World Service.

Can you tell us about your current role at the BBC?

I work as a journalist at BBC Verify where I analyse photos and videos to assess their veracity for use in news programmes. I also find and interview members of the public to hear their experiences in relation to the news agenda and breaking news stories.

How did the course prepare you for working in the media industry?

Through my studies, I learnt what makes a great news story, how to write them for radio bulletins and how to record and edit audio material. Having a good grounding in journalism gave me a head start when it came to acquiring work experience as a reporter - a two-week placement at BBC Radio Suffolk - that in turn led me to get my first role in news journalism.

What opportunities at Westminster helped you break into the industry?

Westminster has a close relationship with the BBC and during my studies, placements were arranged at BBC local stations across the country which was amazing!

On my first day at BBC Suffolk, I was given a map and a car and sent to conduct an interview, then edit it for the evening bulletin. It was nerve-wracking, especially as I didn't know the area, but a great experience. I also volunteered at hospital radio and produced shows on community radio, further building my broadcast experience and demonstrating my commitment to the media industry.

What has been the most valuable part of your studies in getting to where you are today?

The most valuable part of my studies at Westminster was becoming self-sufficient by learning interviewing, recording and editing techniques so that I could create content for output from its inception to the final product. It showed future employers my capabilities and gave me the confidence to work as a news journalist.
