My advice to someone considering studying at Westminster would be to embrace the vibrant atmosphere of London and the university's strong connections to the art and photography communities. Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster and Documentary Photography MA because of the opportunity to learn from industry experts.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been an incredible experience, offering a rich cultural backdrop for my education. The city is a constant source of inspiration, and I've had the privilege of immersing myself in its diverse and dynamic art and photography scene. This exposure has greatly enriched my learning experience. 

Tell us about your course and what have you particularly enjoyed?

I've particularly enjoyed the comprehensive nature of the MA in Documentary Photography at Westminster. The programme’s challenging curriculum, dedicated academic staff and excellent facilities created an ideal environment for me to develop my photography practice. The programme placed equal emphasis on the philosophical and theoretical aspects of photography, providing me with the essential tools to grow in the industry. Additionally, the programme's focus on practical experience allowed me to work on real-world projects and build a portfolio, which has been invaluable in securing opportunities post-graduation. I recommend studying photography at Westminster to any photographers seeking a platform to launch their careers.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The lecturer support at Westminster has been exceptional, especially in fostering our presence within the art scene. Their mentorship has been invaluable in helping us connect with industry professionals and develop our understanding of the art industry.    

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

Beyond the technical facilities, what truly stands out about my course at Westminster is the access to an extensive library with photobook resources. The university's libraries, coupled with its emphasis on critical thinking and engagement with theory, have proven invaluable in expanding our understanding of the ontology of photography. This theoretical foundation has not only enhanced our projects but also deepened our perspectives, making it a distinctive aspect of the programme.

What’s the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The best aspect of being a University of Westminster student is the rich network of fellow students and academics. The university's diverse community allows for valuable peer-to-peer learning, and the accessibility of experienced academics for mentorship and collaboration enhances the overall educational experience.

What was a surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience? 

The most surprising aspect of my Westminster experience was the extent to which the programme encourages interdisciplinary approaches. Despite being on a documentary photography course, the emphasis on interdisciplinary work allowed me to explore and integrate insights from various fields, enabling me to experience other forms of photography.
