Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

Choosing the University of Westminster for my postgraduate studies was a natural progression following the completion of my undergraduate degree in July 2023. The decision was primarily influenced by the exceptional quality of teaching imparted by seasoned professionals within my chosen field during my undergraduate studies. Moreover, the institution's central location held significant appeal, facilitating convenient access despite living outside London. This geographical advantage ensures efficient commute times, underscoring the university's accessibility and contributing to an enriched academic experience.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London for my MSc in Construction Project Management at the University of Westminster has been an exciting journey. With numerous construction sites right on our doorstep, which we have been given the opportunity to visit, London has become more than just a city—it's our classroom. Being the capital, London offers a wealth of opportunities with its plethora of renowned companies.

The University of Westminster's strong ties with these industry leaders provide invaluable practical experiences, internships and potential career paths within the dynamic construction sector and numerous others. In essence, London not only offers an exceptional academic environment but also serves as a gateway to professional growth in construction project management or any other corporate sector you may pursue.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I've chosen to pursue a master's degree in Construction Project Management because it offers a unique edge that employers actively seek. This program equips me with a comprehensive skill set and knowledge base essential for success in the construction industry.

The multidisciplinary nature of the course opens up diverse career opportunities within construction beyond traditional roles. Additionally, the accreditation from both RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) and CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) adds credibility and recognition to my qualifications, enhancing my employability and potential for career advancement. With this degree, I can explore various avenues within construction, ensuring a dynamic and fulfilling professional journey.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic lecturer support at the University of Westminster has been exemplary throughout my studies. Many of my lecturers have demonstrated a commitment to our success by providing an extensive array of helpful academic resources on platforms like Blackboard, enriching our learning experience. What's truly remarkable is the willingness of some lecturers, even those outside of my modules, to offer guidance and support.

They've taken time out of their busy schedules to advise me on pursuing professional bodies such as RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), showcasing their dedication to our academic and professional development. 

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

One standout facility of the Construction Project Management course at the University of Westminster is the access to professional software tools that are essential for success in the field. Students are provided with free access to industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, which can be expensive to obtain independently. This access has enabled me to develop proficiency in crucial tools used in construction project management.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

Yes, I have utilised the University Careers and Employability Service, and it has been an invaluable resource in shaping my career path. By scheduling free meetings with a careers advisor, I was able to receive personalised guidance tailored to my aspirations and strengths. These sessions proved instrumental in developing a comprehensive CV and receiving tailored career advice.

As a result of the support and insights gained through these meetings, I successfully secured a full-time graduate position as a Quantity Surveyor/Contract Manager while completing the remainder of my postgraduate studies here at the University of Westminster.

Make the most of your time with university lecturers by utilising every resource they provide. Attend workshops, seminars, and one-on-one sessions to enhance your understanding and skills. Don't hesitate to seek guidance on assignments and coursework, as their support can significantly impact your success.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The most surprising aspect of my Westminster experience was the level of personalised support and mentorship available from university module leaders and lecturers. I was pleasantly surprised by how approachable and invested they were in their students' success. Whether it was providing extra guidance on coursework, offering career advice, or simple being available for one-on-one discussions, the module leaders and lecturers go above and beyond to ensure that I have been supported and empowered to reach my full potential and do well in assignments.
