Human Resource Management MA – 2025

I enjoyed the balance between theory and practical application throughout the course!

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster as the Human Resource Management MA course was accredited by the CIPD, which I knew would be essential for pursuing a career in people management. I was also drawn to the practical nature of the course, with many opportunities to develop skills learnt in lectures. The central London location of the university was also a deciding factor, allowing me to network and build connections with other HR professionals in the city. Westminster really stood out as a university that could provide me with opportunities both academically and professionally.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been one of the most exciting parts of my degree. There are so many networking events, including CIPD conferences and HR talks, which have allowed me to build connections with other professionals. London provides the perfect opportunity to try out new hobbies or find new interests, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to study here.

Tell us about your course (what have you particularly enjoyed about the programme)?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the balance between academic theory and practical application throughout the course. Being able to apply concepts learnt in lectures to real-world HR problems in the skills workshops has helped me improve my critical thinking skills and confidence as a strategic HR leader. The wide range of modules offered on this course has also helped me to become a more generalist HR professional, which is essential in this field where policies and regulations are always changing. I have also really enjoyed being part of such a diverse cohort of students from a range of professional backgrounds, with many interesting discussions around HR topics had over the year.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic support for this course has been incredible. The lecturers are so knowledgeable in their subject, but also in the wider HR field, and are able to bring in real-life experiences to facilitate our learning. This makes the teaching much more engaging. Academics are always willing to support with assignments and offer feedback on work, which I really appreciated.

Have you used the University Careers and Employability Service?

I had an appointment with the Work Experience and Placement team, who provided some useful advice on finding graduate work opportunities. They also reviewed my CV and offered some feedback on how to tailor it to the roles I am applying for. Following this meeting, I managed to secure a graduate job, so it was definitely worthwhile!

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

As part of the course, the university pays for your joining fee and first year CIPD membership fee, which gives you access to lots of online resources and articles. This has been incredibly helpful when understanding topics from lectures or finding sources for academic writing. Furthermore, the library on the Marylebone campus has excellent study spaces and lots of relevant books.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

Alongside my studies, I worked part-time as a Web Editor through the Talent Bank scheme. I helped to edit and update the university course pages, completed competitor research and worked with the wider Marketing team on projects. I was able to work flexibly around my studies, while still being able to enhance my employability and build a network with other colleagues in the university. I was given so many great opportunities in this role, and I would recommend this to any Westminster student.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Make the most of every opportunity, from academic support to professional networking to exploring the local area with people on your course. Ask as many questions as you need to help you work out if Westminster is for you.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

For me, the best part has been meeting so many incredible people. Academics who are so passionate about their subject and genuinely want students to do well, and students from all different countries who can share their culture and professional experience.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

I was really surprised at how supportive the university has been. Staff and students are always willing to share knowledge and advice from academic and professional perspectives. This has made the year very enjoyable and engaging.
