Fine Art Mixed Media BA- 2022

I enjoyed that the course covers many types of media and that students can interact and be inspired by other students across all three years of the course, whilst still having an individual place to work.  The international and local trips that we had the opportunity to go on were great which allowed us to explore art in different cultures.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

After seeing the University of Westminster at ‘Create Your Future’ (a UCAS fair for the creative industries) I booked to attend one of their Open Days. I was able to have a chat with both current students and the course tutors. I felt a sense of community and a very encouraging environment, which is what I was looking for. Also after seeing all the facilities and other departments, I knew I would have a lot of opportunities to explore, experiment and develop my fine art practice as well as try new things.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London taught me a lot and gave me a great deal of independence. I have been able to meet many amazing people from all over the world. Being in London has also helped with my research for modules, as I can attend various types of artist talks, workshops and exhibitions that take place all year round.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I enjoyed that the course covers many types of media and that students can interact and be inspired by other students across all three years of the course, whilst still having an individual place to work. The international and local trips that we had the opportunity to go on were great which allowed us to explore art in different cultures.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The tutors know all their students and vice versa, so you never need to wait too long for a chat if you need any help. They are always incredibly supportive and understanding, and just as creative when it comes to ideas if you feel stuck in your work. I have also used other academic services outside of my course, such as help in academic writing, as English is my second language. After each meeting, I felt more confident in my skills.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

As part of the Fine Art Mixed Media BA course, we get to use facilities such as printmaking, wood and metal workshops, ceramics and many more. As a first-year student, you get introduced to all of these areas regardless of your previous experience. The technicians there are great at listening and applying their technical knowledge to make your ideas come to life.

Have you used the University Careers and Employability Service? If yes tell us about your experience

I have attended talks and events provided by the Careers and Employability Service that have helped me improve my CV and cover letter writing skills. Using the knowledge that I gained through this, I was able to get a part-time job at the campus library. This allowed me to gain work experience and some extra money, while still prioritising my studies.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

I have taken the opportunity to become a student ambassador and one of the FANS (Friend of Arriving New Students). I am glad I can share my student perspective and my positive experiences with new and future students of Westminster, as I know how much it helped me when I was first starting my journey at Westminster.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

I think it is very important to see the campus before starting your studies, to have a look at the facilities. This way you get a chance to speak to both staff and students to understand how the course runs and also to just get answers to any questions you might have. Once you are a student, I would encourage you to make use of the workshops and events that are taking place - both in and outside of your course of study. Try as many new things as you can as you never know where it might take you.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The University of Westminster, to me, feels like one big community. I have never had a negative experience when seeking help from staff from any department, and I always feel listened to. There is no separation between the courses and there are a lot of opportunities to meet new people, even from other campuses.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

I never realised how many events there are taking place! Starting from societies, talks, events at the student bar and even student stalls in the campus forum. There is always something going on and thanks to that it is easy to find something you might enjoy.
