International Law Aspects of Interplanetary Internet
Dr Filippo Marchetti (Westminster Law School) has been selected by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) to contribute to the drafting of a technical report on the international law aspects of interplanetary internet.
The project will explore the international legal issues connected with the establishment of communication systems in Earth orbit and around other celestial bodies, including the Moon, with the objective of enabling internet connectivity for human communication and scientific data transfer.
Within the IISL working group, Dr Marchetti will lead the work package examining how existing international law regimes regulate, or fail to regulate, this and similar technologies.
The research is began in January 2026 and will run for 18 months.

Supported by the Guy Foundation, the Quantum Biology and Bioenergetics Laboratory investigate how the absence of magnetic fields may affect our biology.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field shields life on earth from harmful solar radiation, but there is increasing evidence that it also may influence biology. As we move to propel astronauts beyond the protective field, there is a need to study how our cells may respond. Our lab, led by Dr Rhys Mould with Sanika Ghayal and Milosha Gracias, use specialised chambers to deflect magnetic fields, to investigate the responses in a range of tissues, including muscle and cartilage, with a particular focus on the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell.
