Women of Westminster network celebrates richness of University’s global diversity

The University of Westminster has hosted a Global Diversity Celebration, bringing together colleagues to recognise the voices, cultures and experiences of women across the University. The event marks a new chapter in the Women of Westminster (WoW) network as two new co-chairs, Zahrah Surooprajally and Sevgi Sarialtin, have been appointed.

The Global Diversity Celebration took place on 19 November and celebrated the richness of the University’s global community. Attendees enjoyed cultural dances, an interactive introduction exercise and an engaging quiz designed to celebrate the many identities, heritages and perspectives that shape the Westminster experience.

The event was one of two held to celebrate the appointment of the WoW network’s new Co-chairs, Zahrah Surooprajally, Events and Student Empowerment Programmes Manager at the University, and Sevgi Sarialtin, Office Administrator for the Vice-Chancellor's Office. The pair aim to build on the strong foundations laid by their predecessors Sobia Razzaq and Dr Kumari Juddoo, and continue the network’s mission to represent the interests of the Westminster community.

Professor Dibyesh Anand, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Global Engagement and Employability, said: “Our University community, as is the case with the world, is marked by a plurality of cultures. We strongly believe in championing diverse ideas, individuals and collectives. We are especially proud to support our Women of Westminster in its endeavours to bring together students and colleagues through its Global Diversity Celebration.”

Deborah Adejobi, Law LLB Honours student and intern in the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team, added: “The Global Diversity Celebration event highlights the richness of our global community. The activities reminded us of the power of listening, connection and cultural appreciation and showed how students can play a key role in making EDI engagement more meaningful. It was a vibrant evening full of learning to celebrate our identities and highlight how often what makes us different brings us closer together!”

Zahrah Surooprajally added: “This event is so vital in bringing us together and celebrating that what makes us different, also makes us the same. Huge thank you to those who attended.”

This event directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 5: Gender Equality and 10: Reduced Inequalities. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
