The visit, that took place on 4 December, was organised by Dr Magdalena Frennhoff Larsén, Reader in Politics and International Relations at Westminster, and Amber Ella, third-year Psychology BSc Honours student and President of the University of Westminster Students Union’s (UWSU) European Affairs Institute.

Students were hosted by diplomats Jan Tatum-Kraus and Andras Kos, who explained the role and purpose of the EU Delegation in London. They discussed the EU-UK relationship and emphasised how, from the EU’s perspective, it has entered into a more stable and constructive phase after a rather turbulent period following the Brexit referendum and the subsequent withdrawal negotiations. They also outlined how the EU has responded to the war in Ukraine to date, stressing the challenge of finding a sustainable peace deal.

Amber Ella said: “It is always a pleasure to be at Europe House. Hearing from experts offers an invaluable learning opportunity for students and enriches our understanding of European affairs.”

Dr Frennhoff Larsén added: “It was great to hear the sharp and insightful questions from the students about everything from the increase in Euroscepticism across the EU to the EU’s enlargement process towards Ukraine. We are very grateful to the EU Delegation for offering this opportunity.”

The visit directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education, 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
